001 over the years it’s become the norm to get a text from one of the vankirk sisters.. either it’s time for the annual holiday photos or they just want to have a session with me – which I love! in return, I have called on them several times when I’ve needed models or because we’ve gotten the random eastern shore snowstorm and I want to shoot. so when I received a text from payton last week saying that she needed some photos for her graduation announcement, I looked at my calendar and we set up a day. a little while later, it started to sink in… graduation announcements. she’s graduating – she’s going away to college – when did all of this happen? and I’ll admit it.. I got a little choked up. when I first met payton, it was during a session that her mother, kristen, had booked 5 years ago. payton and her sister lexie had been so much fun to work with that day but I had no idea that it was the beginning new friendships that would grow like ours have. for this session, payton met me at assateague on a beautiful morning and handed me a coffee that she had picked up for me on the way. silly and sentimental thoughts went through my head.. ‘she’s driving.’ of course she is! ‘she knows that I love coffee.’ who doesn’t know that about me? but I still couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that this young woman who was standing in front of me, showing me all of the outfits she had brought along, was the same little girl with braces that I had met on this same beach years ago. payton, you are so special – you are beautiful and kind and smart and funny and lovely and all around amazing. I am so grateful to have come to know you and call you my friend. I know that you are going to thrive in college and beyond. but when you’re home.. I’m secretly hoping that I’ll still get that random text… ‘do you have some time for some photos?’ I love you!!

1 the last time I saw elessa was at the wedding of her mother, freda, over five years ago. for whatever reason, when freda contacted me about doing senior portraits, I still envisioned the little girl that elessa was that day, all wide eyed and dressed up in white for her mother’s big day. but when we met in pemberton park on an ideal fall evening, a beautiful, (very) tall and lovely young woman stepped out of the car…. with crutches. see elessa is an accomplished athlete and a champion cheerleader and a few days before our session she had suffered an injury to her ankle. when she stepped away to change, I asked freda what had happened and she said that they weren’t trying to panic, that hopefully it was a temporary injury that wouldn’t effect her season, but everyone was a little worried. you wouldn’t know it when elessa came back, ready for the session. whatever concern she may have had regarding her ankle didn’t dampen her upbeat attitude and positive spirit. we had so much fun as we explored different parts of the park with freda and elyssa’s little sister, bri along for the shoot. I’m happy to report that several days later when I spoke with freda, that it had been determined that elessa’s injury was just a hiccup and that she was already back to her normal training schedule :) I so enjoyed getting to see you again and to document such a special time in your life. you are a remarkable person and I know that you will continue to inspire those around you as you begin your next chapter. 1a 2 3 3a 5 6 7 7a 8 9

conner lives here in snow hill and is the son of my friends, susan and gary. he is also the brother of one of my former senior portrait clients, grant. when we were talking about his session, susan told me that he was very into frisbee golf.. and that he played the drums. but when asked what he wanted his senior portraits to be, conner just wanted to stay here in town and keep it simple. we started at their house like we did with grant – the family has such a lovely back yard and it was nice to visit with their pups again. then we headed to green street – I’ve walked down that road a million times and somehow it always looks just a little different which is pretty cool when choosing spots to photograph. we wound up the session at byrd park – the river and surrounding banks were beautiful on this ideal fall afternoon. conner you were so great to work with and I hope that you have such an exciting and fun-filled senior year!

I met brooke and her mom at the beach during a beautiful evening on assateague island – seriously, it couldn’t have been more perfect. the crowds were gone, the light was soft and golden and a light breeze swept across the sand. brooke goes to stephen decatur high school and is in her senior year. I always enjoy photographing senior portrait sessions because I have an opportunity to get to know these young clients and hear all about their big dreams for the future – it’s such an exciting time. I had so much fun with you brooke and I hope that you have an amazing final year in this chapter – I wish you wonderful adventures!

I first met kelly when she needed some photos taken for a modeling portfolio and I had so much fun working with her. this is a girl who loves fashion and getting in front of a camera which makes her a dream to photograph – so I was really excited when her mother, sandy, contacted me to do her senior portraits. we met up along the pocomoke river at byrd park on a gorgeous afternoon. as usual, kelly was enthusiastic, armed with some very cool outfits and ready to go! we had such a great time and caught up on what had been happening with her since our last session. midway through the shoot, her family jumped in for a few photos which I loved. I hope that you have the time of your life during your senior year and I look forward to working with you again soon! 4 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13

because we were across the bridge so much this summer for weddings, we didn’t have the opportunity to work with as many seniors as we normally do – but with those we did photograph, we had such a wonderful time! our seniors never cease to inspire us with their great ideas and fun spirits.

Marleigh came into the studio one day this summer inquiring about senior portraits and when she mentioned the family farm I fell into a daze.  She explained that there was an old hay loft, grain bins, weathered wood with crackled paint, rusted siding and lush fields- basically a photographer’s heaven!  We decided that we’d start there and meet another day to photograph by the water.  I met Marleigh one evening at the farm before sunset and we had a blast- she even climed the ladder of the grain bins!  She is active in the band and soccer for Snow Hill High School.  Their team has been so successful and even won the playoffs!  We finally squeezed in a day to photograph by the water and this young lady even went in!  It was a bit chilly but with her positive attitude and fun spirit she didn’t seem to mind one bit.  We literally jogged to the pier as if we were chasing daylight for some more shots.  I had so much fun working with you and am so proud of you + your team!  Good luck with all of your future adventures! :)

From the moment I met Lydia it seemed like we had known each other forever.  She wanted to do a few sessions, one at Jolly Roger with her two closest friends and her brother, and another one at her home this fall.  It couldn’t have been more perfect!  The photo shoot with her friends was an absolute blast, and you can truly see how much fun they have together.  We were lucky enough to be able to have access to all of the rides and it resulted in some really fun shots.  The second session was much more laid back, but like always we had so much fun laughing and talking about all the joys of college.  I am dying to know her final decision on college, but no matter where she goes I know she will enjoy every minute of it!

I met Haley a few years ago at Pemberton Coffee House where I had the pleasure of working with her + her family.  We talked about Bennett High (my alma mater) and when I ran into her again earlier this year we both thought it’d be fun to do her senior portraits!  We wanted to take some photos with her boyfriend Chad but he is currently away at bootcamp.  However, he was a major part of our conversation during the shoot :)  Haley is absolutely stunning and kept me laughing the whole time.  We got a good workout navigating through the trails and had a perfect sunset to end our evening.  Haley is planning on attending a college somewhere South (possibly Alabama!) and will be graduating next May.  Thank you Haley for a fun day!

Hayley is an all around amazing young lady!  She was surfing one day at Assateague and spotted us photographing another session and asked if we’d take her senior portraits.  I couldn’t wait to work with her after I talked with her on the phone.  She lives in Carroll County but frequents the beach during the summer and loves to surf.  We talked about all of her ideas (including bringing her golden doodle, Summer!) and when she mentioned that she wanted to get in the water with her board I was stoked!    We all met at the studio and made our way to the beach.  Summer had a ball with the waves and Hayley, her mother and I all soaked up some of the last beautiful rays of the season and had a great time.  She plans on attending college for Environmental or Marine Science but in the mean time will occupy her days with soccer, lacrosse and the beach!  Thanks Hayley for a perfect Sunday afternoon- good luck with your senior year and your adventures after! :)
