if you know me at all, it may surprise you to learn that for a good portion of my life, I was terrified of dogs. not just mildly afraid when they barked, not merely nervous when they ran my way, but an all out ‘I-am-not-coming-to-your-awesome-birthday-party-because-you-have-a-dog’ terror when it came to man’s best friend. although my mom said that I was once nipped by an excitable cocker spaniel, there was really no basis for my behavior ~ but there it was. then one day, I met a cute guy (note: for better or worse, many of the important decisions I made during my twenties began with those 5 words) and he had a dog who was expecting her first litter. did I want to come meet his dog? ummmm… no. but after peppering him with questions, I learned that she was so close to delivering, that she rarely moved other than to eat, drink, and go outside. so I took my chances, and went. this dog could have cared less if I was there, let alone get close enough to make me nervous, so I exhaled. a few days later, the puppies were born and I spent the next two months visiting almost daily and doing what I could to help these 12 (twelve!) lab/great dane pups as they started navigating this world. it should come as no surprise, although it did to me at the time, that I fell head over heels with one of them. he had been nicknamed dempsey due to his rough and tumble nature and when it was time to release the puppies to their new homes, dempsey came home with me and my love affair with big dogs began. then about 5 years ago, I started getting more and more requests from my clients for their dogs to be included in their sessions – esessions, family shoots, and even wedding days were made even more special when the four-legged members of the family joined in and I loved it. so much so, that we started santa paws – easily our most anticipated and popular sessions of the year. we have worked with shelters, kennels, and even the baltimore ravens ~ with the goal being to raise funds for animals in need. what I trying to say, is that I know dogs. not only to I know dogs, but I love to interact with them, and I know how to photograph them – huge, small, old, or young. super friendly or standoffish – there isn’t a dog that I haven’t been able to work with and they always leave me smiling and smitten by the end of the session. but a cat? now that’s a whole other deal… I met kimberly at the wedding of meredith and josh at the beginning of this year’s summer season. soon after, I received an email from her requesting a session with her cat, sarah. I love cats, I really do – as a result of my no dogs allowed policy as a kid, my mom and I had several and I loved them all dearly. but when working with animals, I had become accustomed to being in charge.. or at least something resembling control. with a cat, I knew that the game was going to change, but I was looking forward to it. as kimberly welcomed me into their home, I went upstairs to meet sarah. unfortunately, she has been facing some health challenges so typically a stranger means some sort of treatment, and she was understandably cautious. kimberly and I sat and talked, letting her get used to me and my camera, getting a little closer, bit by bit. she sat in her favorite place in the sun and began to relax. I followed as she cooled down in the hallway, went to another room to perch from another familiar spot, and snuggled up with kimberly. I just took her lead to capture sarah being sarah and it was lovely.

1if you follow the blog, or any of us on facebook and instagram, you already know that we are a studio of dog lovers. all of us have dogs and we post their mischievous antics, sweet moments, and everyday cuteness… a lot. so when we have an opportunity to photograph pups, we are so there! whether it’s our annual santa paws charity shoot or they happen to make their way into a family session, anytime that dogs are a part of a shoot, it brings an unpredictable fun to the shoot that we love. this year, we began getting inquiries about sessions specifically for pet photography and we are really looking forward to shooting more of these in 2015. for all of us, our dogs are much loved family members and having the opportunity to capture similar relationships for our clients is truly a gift.

1 This adorable and spunky chocolate lab is Kona!  She is the new baby of one of our favorite couples, Ellen + Ross!  You may recall their engagement session and wedding last year on our blog.  Ellen + Ross are both serving in the U.S. Air Force (thank you!) and shortly after their wedding Ellen was deployed overseas.  As their first anniversary approached earlier this month, Ross decided to surprise Ellen with a “Welcome Home” and anniversary present.  They named this sweet puppy Kona after the beautiful place they went to in Hawaii on their honeymoon.  Two weeks ago we met up right across the street from where Ellen and Ross were married and had a blast!  Kona covered 5 times the amount of ground that we three did that day.  She even found her way in to the pond for a swim!  I loved how curious and playful Kona is!  It was so good to see you two again and to meet Miss Kona!  I’m so happy you both had a wonderful first anniversary together. :) 1a 2 3 4 5 6 7 7a 7b 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 16 17 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 29 30 31 400 500 I had so much fun- can’t wait for the next time! :D

all of us here at the studio are dogs owners and we LOVE working with them. in addition to our in-studio events, a lot of our clients brought them along to their sessions (and their weddings!) which always makes us smile. this year, due to popular demand, we had our annual santa paws benefit shoot both here in snow hill and for the first time, we held one in baltimore. it’s so awesome that santa paws has grown into such an anticipated event and that it has given us the ability to help local shelters. we also had the opportunity to work a rescue benefit at downtown dog resort with some baltimore ravens players – which was SO much fun! next year we are planning 3 dog days benefit sessions and can’t wait to play with more of our much loved four-legged clients :)

as some of you may or may not know, we first met our associate photographer laura when she was a GPA bride. shortly after we met her and husband derek, they adopted their dog cooper who they are madly in love with. so when we announced our annual santa paws event here at the studio last year, they quickly signed up. seeing as how they came from baltimore for a 25 minute session, they made a little side trip out of it but we loved that they came all that way for our little charity shoot. then this year, as a member of the team, laura made the suggestion that because so many of our clients are across the bridge, that maybe we should have a santa paws shoot in baltimore. I thought it was such a great idea and laura quickly got a location lined up with downtown dog resort. as soon as we announced santa paws for both our studio and in baltimore this year, we were happily booked up within hours – I love how popular this event has become because not only does it help rescue organizations, but I could work with dogs all day, every day and be very, very, very happy. as soon as I arrived at downtown dog, I met the manager jim and he simply could not have been more accommodating and wonderful to work with. we saw some old friends as well as meeting some new folks and of course there were the pups…. we had such an amazing time with all of you and are looking so forward to next year!

it’s time for our third annual dogs days charity shoot! and this year we have an exciting new addition – in addition to our event here at the studio in snow hill, we will also be having a santa paws event in baltimore! that’s right.. you asked and we are coming across the bridge :)

charity details: the session fee is only $30 and includes an online gallery and 1 8×10 print. we are also asking for a donation of at least 10lb bags of dry cat or dog food to be given to a local shelter and the downtown dog resort’s rescue. food donations can be brought to the event the day of the session

This past Saturday we hosted one of our favorite Dog Days events – Santa Paws!  We collected 450 lbs of dry food, 25 cans of wet food, oodles of toy + treats and best of all, played with 35 lovable dogs! :)  Some of our amazing clients who couldn’t make our annual event even shipped in food to help our cause!  All of the donations are going to Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary - a no kill shelter.  We were so glad to see some old friends and to make some new ones.  Thanks to everyone who made this event such a success!  It was a perfect way to jump start our holiday season here at GPA and we had a blast!  Be sure to keep a lookout on the blog for our post about this fun filled day of woofs + wags! :)
