1today’s best-of blogpost is basically a part two of wednesday’s maternity post. especially when working with first time parents, there is a lot of excitement, anticipation, and a little fear of the unknown as they wait for their baby to arrive. then… their son or daughter is born and anything that they may have been anxious about before has disappeared. it is a time of such tenderness, wonder, pure joy, and unconditional love. photographing these sessions allows us to see another side of our clients and friends as they enter into this new chapter of their family story and it always leaves us grateful for the opportunity to capture such lovely moments. we also had the pleasure of photographing several sessions where older brothers and sisters, whom we had photographed as newborns several years ago, joined us. seeing our families grow right before our eyes is one of the great joys of what we have the privilege of doing xoxo

001this year 6 of our couples shared the happy news with us that they were expecting! these soon-to-be-parents had some really cool location ideas and we had sessions everywhere from the beaches of delaware and national parks to the comforts of home. older kids and the family pups often joined in which we loved! on two occasions, we had the maternity sessions scheduled but the babies had a different game plan and arrived before we completed the session (everyone is healthy and happy!) check back to the blog tomorrow for our best-of newborn post where you will get to meet some of the new additions to our GPA family.

1sometimes you have that moment.. or in this case a series of many moments during a session. the weather is ideal, the wardrobe choices are perfection, and the client is fun, fearless, and just gets you and your vision for the shoot. such was the evening that I spent with this lovely mother-to-be. cailyn is the younger sister of my dear friend and client, amanda. many moons ago, amanda and I worked together and I remember cailyn coming in to visit her sister… she seemed so young at the time ~ and she was. time has flown! not only has amanda had two beautiful children since then, but now cailyn is expecting her first. we had such a beautiful evening on chincoteague – given the time of year, it was downright chilly and glorious. cailyn was simply amazing as she went along with anything that I suggested and then some ~ this being her first pregnancy, she is so comfortable in her skin and it shows in the way she moves and in her sparkling eyes… she’s SO excited to be a mom and I am so very happy for her. I can’t wait to met your baby and the newest addition to a family that I love dearly xoxo

1from the moment that I met kristin and rob, I loved them. even though, technically, it wasn’t the first time that I really met kristin…. (you can read all about that in their wedding blogpost) anyhoo… they are such a special couple. they are kind, and funny, and obviously head over heels for each other. I tried to count, and I think with all of the sessions combined, I have worked with one or both of them 7 times.. and each time is cooler than the last because I get to learn just a little more about them. this time, our conversations revolved around their impending parenthood and they are both so excited to become a family. we spent the afternoon at quiet waters park and managed to get our full session photographed before a major storm hit and we couldn’t help but feel lucky for having the opportunity to share this time before they are a party of three. I am looking so forward to meeting your baby and your next blogpost…. the gibbons family! xoxox

1this session has been several years and three babies in the making.. see, in the west household, I have been given the nickname, ‘the inducer’. when I photographed kelly and alex’s wedding, I knew how excited they were to start a family ~ so when they learned that they were expecting their first child, daniel, I knew we were going to be doing a maternity session. we got the session on the schedule and then shortly thereafter, she went into labor. everyone was fine, but the session never happened. then, a couple of years later, kelly was pregnant with their daughter, hadley. we got the session on the schedule and kelly even went out and bought a dress. and then….. yep, she went into labor. happy and healthy little girl, but no session. so this time… this time! we were on a mission. kelly texted me to let me know that she had gotten the dress and I teased, ‘okay, lay down and don’t move until the session’. we laughed, but I think we were both crossing our fingers at the time. but we needn’t have worried ~ we were given a beautiful day and I had the best time working with all of them. daniel and hadley are so much fun and kelly and alex… well, they’re just about the coolest couple I know. I am looking so forward to meeting the newest baby west and am really grateful that we were finally able to make our many plans and ideas a reality this time. I love you all and am so happy for you! xoxo

1this year 8 of our couples shared the happy news with us that they were expecting! these soon-to-be-parents had some really cool location ideas and we had sessions everywhere from the beaches of delaware and national parks to the comforts of home. older kids and the family pups often joined in which we loved! on two occasions, we had the maternity sessions scheduled but the babies had a different game plan and arrived before we completed the session (everyone is healthy and happy!) check back to the blog tomorrow for our best-of newborn post where you will get to meet some of the new additions to our GPA family.

1since photographing their wedding 4 years ago, susan and mike have become 2 of my favorite people and dear friends. I also became quite smitten with their pup, lucy, on their wedding day ~ any couple who includes their dog in their wedding is automatically one of my favorites… obviously :) over the summer, I was told the happy news that they were expecting and it was mike who suggested that we get together to document this happy time. (his second best idea ever!) so we met up on a beautiful fall morning to catch up and capture this next chapter in their family story. I was thrilled that lucy was able to join us! my sweet girl is getting up there in age and traveling isn’t always easy ~ but as always, she was so loving and happy and our session wouldn’t have been the same without her. I just returned from colorado and while I was away, their son carter was born ~ I am looking so forward to meeting him later this week! I am so happy for my friends and so grateful that I have the honor to be a small part of this lovely time. love you all! xoxo

001I love it when clients introduce me to a new location here on the shore ~ it’s a pretty rare occurrence. after photographing sessions from lewes to cape charles, I assume that I know all of the spots.. even the ‘secret’ ones. but for adriane and nick’s maternity session, I met them at park that they suggested which is tucked back in the woods of west OC and it was so lovely. the leaves were still on fire in their brilliance and the late afternoon sun glowed as we walked the paths with their pup, frank, tagging along. adriane and nick have recently moved to the area after having lived in hawaii and are due any day now with their first child. I am looking so forward to our next session when you will be a family of 4 and I will have the honor of meeting your daughter. I had such a wonderful evening with you… and I will see you – soon!

1sarah is one of those people that I should have met years ago… our circles of people are so intertwined. so when I met her and shane for their maternity session, it felt as though we were already old friends. the location wasn’t a coincidence either, my dear friend nettie (sarah’s friend too, naturally :) ) had been married here several years ago and it’s one of my favorite places. we began at the barn and wandered our way down the back dirt roads that eventually would lead us to the highway. we had a gorgeous morning and sarah and shane were so wonderful to work with. if I asked them to jump a ditch, they jumped that ditch. if I suggested that a weed field might be pretty, they were already headed into it before I could pick up my camera. I am so happy that we finally met and am looking forward to many other sessions in our future ~ congratulations on your latest adventure together! xo

1ashlee is the daughter of one of my dear friends, diane. although ashlee and I had only met once, at the wedding of her cousins, julie + tyler, she’s that kind of person that you feel like you’ve known forever. ashlee is an acupuncture therapist who currently lives in arizona, but recently she contacted me to let me know that she had a trip planned back east to see her family and inquired about us getting together for a session and I was SO excited to work with her! unfortunately, her husband wasn’t able to make the trip, but her daughter, meela, was with her…. let me tell you a little something about meela… this girl has sass! she is so much fun and a spark of light that I loved spending the afternoon with. I am so very happy for all of you as you welcome this new member into your beautiful family. I hope that we have the opportunity to see each other again soon!  xoxoxo
