I know it shouldn’t come as a surprise.. but after many years of working with some wonderful families, I still never cease to be amazed by the growth of my littlest clients from session to session. I guess you could say that I ‘met’ vivian the first time that I met her parents during their maternity session last summer. soon after I was sent the happy news that she had arrived and I headed to DC to meet this beautiful little girl in person for her newborn session. her parents, skye and stephen, contacted me about heading to the beach to celebrate her first birthday and I was looking so forward to seeing them all. as they pulled up into the parking lot to meet me, I glanced in the backseat to say hello. those curls! those lashes! that smile! vivian had grown into a giggly, adorable, and very happy toddler. we headed to the beach and shared such a lovely morning as she explored.. working hard to get used to the sand beneath her feet. I can’t wait until our next session!

if you are a follower of the blog, then you definitely know this family. ever since I photographed kate and mark’s esession, I have had the pleasure of shooting their wedding, documenting the anticipation of their maternity session, and capturing the joy of a new family once their son trey arrived. when the holidays rolled around, kate wanted to mark trey’s first christmas and the whole family headed to nichol’s tree farm on a beautiful winter afternoon. every time I see trey, I can’t believe how much he’s grown. this little man definitely has a big personality all his own and it’s so much fun to see the changes in him from session to session. alas, one of my favorite members of this family, their big and beautiful chocolate lab brant wasn’t able to join us for this session, but I’m sure I will see them all again soon!

every year, at about this time, I get a call from the vankirk girls… and I am always SO happy. one, it means that it’s time for our annual photo shoot… and two, I know that I am going to be able to spend some time with two of my favorite people on the planet. in 2011, lexie and payton’s mother, kristen, contacted me about doing a session with her girls. a lot of times, girls the ages that lexie and payton were at the time can be a little shy and reserved when getting photographed… but not these two! as soon as we met – pardon the camera pun – we just clicked. they were so much fun and wonderful to work with.. whether individually or together, they were giggly, goofy, lovely, and totally themselves in front of my lens. and because I know it will make them cringe, below is a photo from our first session :) if you’d like to take a trip down memory lane, all of our sessions are here, here, herehere, here, and here

in the years since, they have worked with us for some modeling and editorial jobs as well as our annual shoot together. one thing we can’t seem to get together is scheduling when it’s warm.. it seems that every year, once all of our schedules get aligned, it’s the coldest day of the year. but what I love about them is that there is never a complaint or even an acknowledgement.. we just start shooting and the weather doesn’t seem to matter. this year was no exception – we met at the inlet to shoot on the jetty and the wind was howling! I parked in the lot and soon after, the girls pulled up – payton was driving! of course she was.. they’re both old enough to drive, but this was the first time that their mother hadn’t driven and once again I was reminded of how quickly time passes. cute little girls grow into beautiful young women who drive.. and have boyfriends..and go to college (yikes!). but one thing that has never changed is the lovely nature of these two. lexie and payton are easily two of the kindest, funniest, and most genuine people I have ever met and I love them both so much. I think they already know this, but they are stuck with me…. senior portraits, sister sessions, their weddings and beyond – they’ve got a photographer, and friend, for life xoxoxox

1 when I first met jamie and drew, it was at their maternity session at wye island. they were both clearly so excited about becoming parents for the first time and I was happy that after their baby arrived, I would be seeing them again. jamie contacted me not too long after to share the happy news – miss hattie had arrived! I got to their house where I was greeted by their first ‘baby’, pup ruby. hattie was in her nursery, happily awake and beautiful! the whole session she never fussed.. just calm and happy as jamie and drew held her. as I can’t help but doing if a dog is in the family, I had ruby hop up on the bed with the family for a few and she posed like a rockstar :) I am so happy for all of you and can’t wait to see you again! 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 12a 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 22

there’s pretty much nothing cuter than a baby sitting in a pile of pumpkins, so when laura and ben decided to do their next grow-with-me session with their daughter, aria, at weber’s farm in parkville, I was really excited. kristie photographed laura and ben’s wedding last spring as well as aria’s newborn session and from what she shared with me about this adorable family, I was looking so forward to meeting all of them. I met up with them on a perfect fall day and it was so much fun to watch aria play with the pumpkins. she’s becoming quite mobile and it was so cute seeing her explore and test her balance as we wandered around the farm. at the end of the session, aria got to share some exciting news :)

sometimes it doesn’t seem possible that time really passes by as quickly as it does… but if I have proof, actual photographic proof, of anything, it’s that time keeps on rolling at a astonishing speed – some of the kids I photographed as toddlers are seniors.. seniors!! and when I work with a couple who is starting their family, it never ceases to surprise me to see them and witness all of the changes at the next session, and then the next. when I first met tara and matt, it was during her maternity session on their farm. in addition to getting to know them during our time together that day, I also was introduced to their fur-kids hokie and gunner who I instantly fell for… it was impossible not to – they are 2 of the coolest pups I have ever met :) when I returned to the farm several weeks later, it was to meet their son cayden for the first time for his newborn session. for our most recent session, I pulled up to their new home where I was enthusiastically greeted by hokie and gunner – they were the primary reason that we were working at the house… my mission was to get a photo of all 5 of them. I knelt down and scratched them both behind the ears, giving them a pep talk and posing tips ‘keep your ears up boys, it makes your cuteness even more adorable.’ when tara opened the door, the little boy I saw was no longer anything close to a newborn – with big blue eyes and a wide smile, it was clear that mr. cayden was growing up. as always, it was so much fun to work with all of you and I can’t wait to see you again soon!

It’s hard to forget this handsome little fellow with his blonde hair and sapphire blue eyes. :) You might remember Andrew’s newborn session featured on our blog and then a year ago I met up with the gang for his nine month session.  This summer Jen and I decided that it was time for another shoot! I should mention that photo sessions are always an adventure with the Vertz/Kruse family ;)  Whether we happen to randomly schedule sessions on the hottest day of the year, incur a chance flooding, catch a stomach bug or whatever else life decides to throw at us- we always manage to roll with it and have a great time and a lot of laughs.  So naturally, this year’s session greeted us with a 10 minute rain storm and then clear skies the rest of the evening. ;)  One of the many things that I love about this family is their care free nature and positive outlook on life.  When the rain started pouring down we all just laughed and said, “Of course it would rain!” and then we just let Andrew run around and explore.  It was so great to see him in this element.  Throughout the whole session I just saw how intrigued and curious he was at the waves rolling up on the beach and the feeling of the sand between his little toes and fingers.  Andrew is a little over a year and a half and full of energy and excitement. I loved being able to chase him around and capture his expression when he saw the seagulls and the kites.  I’m so glad that Jen and Nick didn’t let the rain ruin the evening but instead saw it as a fun family outing and that I was able to capture Andrew.  It was so great to see you all again!! I always have a great time! :D  Can’t wait for this fall! xoxo

it’s been quite awhile since I have had the pleasure to see my friends lindsay and alex and the last time I photographed their family was during son wyatt’s newborn session. when I met then at the inn at perry cabin in saint mikes a few weeks ago, I was blown away by how much he had grown. then there was the main reason that we were all getting together – wyatt is going to be a big brother.. soon! we had such beautiful weather as we strolled the grounds of one of my favorites places here on the shore. every time we would turn a corner there would either be a stunning water view or an inspired garden overflowing with vibrant colors and texture. thank you for sharing such a lovely morning with me and  I am looking so forward to see you all soon once the baby arrives.

1I can’t believe this sweet, little girl is already one!  Miss Alexis Lynn and my cousins Stacie + Rusty are already stars here at Gillette Portrait Arts.  Before Alexis was born I photographed Stacie’s maternity session and once she arrived I shot Alexis’ newborn session.  When May rolled around this year it was time for another photo shoot with this little princess!  We met at my lovely Aunt Debbie’s house for a “girl’s day” and my beautiful grandmother joined us as well!  Alexis showed off her new swimsuit and then played in Grandma’s garden for a bit.  We came inside and used my great-great grandmother’s chest in some photos and Alexis wore her Minnie Mouse outfit!  You are so full of personality and beautiful just like your mother- I love you, Alexis! :) 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 15 16 17 18 19 20 28 29 40 40a 41

a couple of months ago, I traveled to kent island for jennifer and brent’s maternity session. they, along with their fur-kids boomer and ralphie were busy getting ready for the arrival of their daughter and were so excited! several weeks later I got the good news that lana had been born and I was looking so forward to seeing them again. initially we were going to have our session as their home but then the whole family decided to take a vacation in bethany beach and I headed their way. it was wonderful to meet everyone and spend the afternoon with them – and it was very obvious that everyone was head over heels in love with lana. I am so happy for all of you and can’t wait until our next session!
