andrea and heath were one of our favorite couples last year – mostly because they are just super nice and clearly are head over heels for each other, but also because they handled a really crappy weather forecast on their wedding day with humor and grace. see their location had one of the most stunning views for fall foliage as far as the eye could see and their ceremony and portraits were to be overlooking this view – but as kris and I drove to meet up with andrea, it was clear that the rarely used plan b was mandatory. it was just raining, it wasn’t just cold, it was dumping slushy snow. all that was important to them was to celebrate their love for one another with their friends and family and tie the knot! :)

  • where and when did you get married? Heath and I got married at Mountain Branch Golf Course in Joppa, Maryland on October 29, 2011
  • was there a particular reason for choosing your venue?  We chose the venue because it had a relaxing, rustic feel to it and his aunt got married there several years before and we just loved it
  • who were your vendors?  our vendors were Jacob Jensen of Absolute Entertainment who rocked the dance floor all night, Wessels Florist in Ellicott city and Yai Yai’s Bakery. Everyone was very kind and the flower arrangement were unbelievable.
  • what’s the best piece of advice you could give to a couple currently planning their wedding? relax, have fun and always have a backup plan for weather in Maryland :)
  • what was your most memorable moment(s)? Obviously the memorable moment for us was having the unpredictable snowfall in October and having to adjust to last minute plans. We had a blast either way and were so happy that we were married, I don’t think we felt the frostbite on our toes. Definitely will never forget taking photos in the snow :)
  • where did you honeymoon?  we honeymooned in Cabo. it was sunny and 80′s everyday so we were able to escape the cold weather.

meet amelia and joel! they are a couple who had one of the most personal and special weddings I have ever had the honor to photograph. from their ceremony location to the dog treat bar at the reception – every detail was carefully and thoughtfully included in their big day. I had such a great time with them and hope to have the chance to see them again soon!

  • where and when did you get married? Easton, MD – May 21,2011
  • was there a particular reason for choosing your venue? Our ceremony was held at the Third Haven Friends Meeting in Easton, MD. I (the bride) grew up attending this meeting. The Meeting House, was built in 1684 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), making it one of the oldest continuously operating sites of worship in the United States! The reception was held at the Tidewater Inn in the Gold Room. An absolute fantastic venue – beautiful space, friendly staff, great value too.
  • who were your vendors? invitations – handmade but made with Paper Source card stock and templates. Bridal + Attendant Gowns – Pattrapon Bridal (kensington, md). Hair – Studio2 (easton, md). Flowers – Seaberry Farms (federalsburg, md). Catering – The Tidewater Inn (easton, md). Music – Hero Entertainment. Band – Paradise (perry hall, md)
  • what’s the best piece of advice you could give to a couple currently planning their wedding? I would advise all soon-to-be brides and grooms to remember that whatever family squabbles you have over the invite list, the beverage selection, or the ceremony readings, will all fade away by the time you get to your big day. To that end, you should do what is most important to you as a couple. Do whatever best captures your style and spirit. If the financial backing for the wedding (parents? other family?) disagrees with you, discuss whether that particular issue is truly a deal-breaker for their support. Typically it is not. Stand your ground. As an addendum to that… Have no guilt about whatever your splurge item is. Whether you choose fancy flowers, a world-renowned DJ, or your own fireworks show, you chose that splurge for a reason and it is important. The only other piece of significant advice I would have is to take some pictures before the ceremony. It is an incredibly intimate and important time for the bride and groom to spend together on a day you will be interacting with many, many people. Take that time to enjoy each others company, and no-one else. Thanks to Raye and her crew, the photos will be some of the best you take the whole day.
  • what was your most memorable moment(s)? I loved our ceremony. It was one of the most spiritual, emotional, and important times in my entire life. Surrounded by the most important people in our lives, we were able to demonstrate our commitment to one another in such a joyful and personal way. Though having my maid of honor and now sister-in-law belt out a Ke$ha song (with our band as backup) ranks up there as well… Everyone had so much fun at the reception. That was definitely on of our top priorities for the big day.
  • if you had it to do over again, would you change anything and what/why?  I literally don’t think I would change a thing, except for maybe worrying through the year-plus planning process. I couldn’t have been happier with every single one of our vendors. I wrote testimonials for every last one of them after our wedding. We worked hard to seek out good, affordable vendors and it definitely paid off.
  • where did you honeymoon?Le Blanc Spa & Resort in Cancun, Mexico – I have to admit that I just logged onto trip adviser, picked ‘Mexico – All Inclusive’ and booked the top-rated resort. It was a great choice. We spent the entire week doing mostly nothing… sitting on the beach, reading, drinking mojitos… we definitely needed to recuperate after all of the festivities. We couldn’t have picked a better spot for that.

wow! time really does fly! it’s been almost a year since our last friday flashback installment. happily it’s been because we have been out of the studio meeting and working with some of the best people and clients ever! because we want you to meet them too we are back to our weekly friday flashback posts. first up is jessica and alex :) since the first time I sat down with jessica and her mom, I knew I was going to love working with her – and not only have we photographed her wedding, but a dog and family session as well. jess and alex are such a great couple and every time we work together I end up loving them more!

  • where and when did you get married?  october 8th, 2011 harbortowne resort – saint michaels
  • was there a particular reason for choosing your venue?  my late grandfather owned one of the very first homes in harbortowne. his boat dock can be seen in our sunset photos. I wanted him with me on our special day and I knew he would be.
  • who were your vendors?gillette portrait artsseasonal flowers - julie bakeseastern shore photo booth
  • what’s the best piece of advice you can give to a couple currently planning their wedding?   have fun!! it goes by way too fast!!
  • what was your most memorable moment(s)?  a surprise firework display across the water most definitely!
  • if you had it to do over again, would you change anything and what/why?  we would have gotten a different dj – a local one
  • where did you honeymoon?  we went on a mini-honeymoon to ocean city which is where alex proposed. we are going on a cruise to haiti next year.

I had to dig back in the archives for jenni and tim’s photos. they were basically my first wedding as GPA. since their wedding day, they have welcomed sons rogan and evan into their family and I have been so grateful to be able to document it all! I become friends with a lot of my brides but few as close as jenni – we try to have lunch at least once a month and I’m so happy to consider her and her family dear friends.

  • where and when did you get married? we got married on June 5, 2004 in Newark, MD at my best friends Mom’s house.
  • was there a particular reason for choosing your venue? Tim: free  :)   Jenni: We chose her house because we wanted to have a backyard wedding. Her home is lovely and the backyard is huge with a nice pond and fields of flowers
  • what your most memorable moment(s)? Tim: Our vows and the banging dance party  Jenni: For me the whole day was memorable. I would, if I had to pick a ‘moment’ it was probably when I was standing outside the tent and I was watching EVERYONE on the dance floor. I remember seeing all of our family and friends and thinking how lucky we were to have them all here and to have found each other
  • if you had it to do over again, would you change anything and what/why? Tim: nothing  Jenni: If I had to do it over again I would have not taken on so much myself. I grew the centerpieces and made the favors – I almost gave myself an ulcer over the centerpieces!
  • where did you honeymoon? Aruba

friday flashbacks took a bit of a vacation…. and by vacation I mean almost 2 months! after our busiest wedding season ever we switched right over to holiday season and it’s been a whirlwind here at the studio. but now that cards have been designed and prints ordered, we’re getting back to a bit of a normal rhythm and back to our friday feature. I thought it would be great to jump start it with jen and brad – not only because they are one of our favorite couples but also because they are expecting their first child in just a few weeks! I had the privilege in going up to baltimore to do a maternity session with them earlier this week and we can not wait to meet baby brandon!

  • where and when did you get married? febuary 11,2011 St. Wenceslaus Church
  • was there a special reason for choosing your venue? Brad: I did not have one, whatever jen wanted  Jen: the reason for getting married in the church we chose was because it’s where my mom’s parents got married (my grandmother still attends mass there regularly to this day!), my mom and dad got married there, and my brother and sister-on-law got married there. I was also baptized there and I wanted to keep with “tradition” so to speak. It’s an old catholic church that’s located in not the best part of baltimore city, but it’s beautiful and it holds a lot of memories for me. The reason for choosing Martin’s West for our reception was simply because it was in our budget! :)
  • what was your most memorable moment(s)?  Brad: repeating my vows to jen, it was nice that we were dedicating ourselves to each other  Jen: when the church doors opened and seeing everyone there to celebrate with Brad and I, then just zoning in on my soon-to-be husband! He’s all I saw for the rest of the wedding ceremony! :) Seeing Brad’s face light up when we were dancing to our first dance as husband and wife. He didn’t know that I chose his song and mine as our first dance songs! And seeing Brad’s face when he got tacos (his favorite dish) as part of his dinner at the reception! He couldn’t believe I actually ordered him tacos :) And lastly, just enjoying the few moments that we had alone together that evening. It just seemed so surreal that it was OUR wedding day!!
  • if you had it to do over again whould you change anything and what/why? Brad: I would have made the reception last longer. Other than that it was great Jen: I would do it all over again in a heart beat!!! I loved our wedding day, everything about it!! I literally had a meltdown about it being over once we got back to our hotel room that evening. I was so sad that it went by so fast! One this I would change if I could do it all over again is I would remember to get a few of the “must-have” pics that I forgot to get.
  • where did you honeymoon? Ocho Rios Jamaica, Mon

I am so SO happy for you both and so honored to be included to document your big beautful life together!! xo

one of the favorite things about my job is getting to meet so many different people and a lot of my clients become dear friends. mel and mike are two of those people. I had been hired by mel’s sister brittany to shoot her wedding to josh and just a few weeks later I got a call from mel and mike wanting me to shoot theirs as well. we hit it off right away and stayed in touch since their big day. I knew that mel had an interest and obvious talent in photography so when kristie and I were planning on hiring new team members last winter, I gave her a call. happily she has joined us and been such a wonderful addition to our GPA family! and in just a little less than a month, she and mike are going to become new parents to a baby girl they’ve named bella :) do you think little bella is going to be photographed much?? her 3 aunties here at the studio are SO excited!!

  • where and when did you get married? shad landing, snow hill october 16th 2009
  • was there a special reason for choosing your venue? we’re both outdoorsy, we really like the woods and wanted to get married somewhere that would have a beautiful view of the fall colors and be able to house our guests, too. we had a great, scenic backdrop and the pavilion we had for the reception had a cozy fireplace. it was perfect!
  • what was your most memorable moment(s)? mike and I both agree – the rain. ever since I was a little girl, I always wanted to get married in the rain. we did and it was perfect!
  • if you had it to do over again, would you change anything and what/why? not a single thing. it was perfect!
  • where did you honeymoon? we took a stay-cation for our honeymoon. we didn’t travel anywhere, just took a few days off to spend time together as newlyweds!

liz and john were one of those couples who just seemed to soak up every minute of their big day. it was my first christmas wedding and I loved it. the church was  decorated with poinsettias and red ribbons and liz’s dress with the red details was perfect! we became friends and stayed in touch and I have had the privilege to document their growing family in the years since – welcoming sons mason and cooper. such cute boys!! I cherish being a witness as my couples turn into parents and watching their families grow :)

  • where and when were you married? we got married December 17, 2005 at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea in Ocean City and our reception was at the Golden Sands
  • was there a particular reason for choosing your venue?we got married at St. Mary’s because that is my home church and all of the significant moments of my life have happened there. Now, both of my boys have been baptized in the same church. We chose the Golden Sands because we really wanted an ocean view and it provided that view with TONS of beautiful ocean front windows!
  • what was your most memorable moment(s)? I loved getting our pictures taken on the beach. It gave us a few quiet moments to ourselves. I also loved being surprised by Santa at the end of the reception. Our theme was the twelve days of Christmas and his appearance ended the night perfectly!
  • if you had it to do over again, would you change anything and what/why? I am not sure I would change anything. The weather couldn’t have been more beautiful and everyone seemed to have a great time, especially us!
  • where did you honeymoon? We honeymooned at the Happiest Place on Earth, Walt Disney World in Florida. It has always been one of my favorite places to go and John hadn’t been there since he was a kid. It was a great honeymoon!!

SO excited to feature deborah and aram this week – they are an amazing couple with such a touching story. their wedding was beautiful and one of my favorites. this past march they won our valentines day contest and if you click here, you’ll understand why. I am so happy to know them and call them friends!

  • where and when did you get married? Aram and I were married on june 26, 2010 at my parent’s house in cambridge
  • was there a special reason for choosing your venue? I knew as soon as my parents bought the house that I wanted to get married there. thankfully, Aram agreed with me
  • what was your most memorable moment(s)? it sounds cliched, but the whole day was pure magic. because of what we had been through with my cancer and it’s treatment, the wedding felt like a celebration not only of Aram and me and our love, but of life and all it’s amazingness
  • if you had it to do over again, would you change anything and if so, what/why? I had so much fun that I wouldn’t change anything. that being said if I had an unlimited amount of money (and really accommodating friends and family), I would love to have a series of wedding celebrations, just to try different party styles (destination one time, a black tie affair the next….)
  • where did you honeymoon? Aram and I didn’t go on our honeymoon right away, as I had to go through radiation treatment first. after that was finished we spent about two weeks in Bali, Indonesia and it was absolutely amazing.

if you’ve read this blog at all, you have met the alexander family. they are clients who have become very dear friends over the years. from their e-session with dog maddie, to the wedding of jeff’s sister kathy a few weeks ago, I have had the honor and pleasure of photographing this family many times over the years – it’s because of people like them that I feel blessed to do what I do :)

  • where and when did you get married? we got married on may 14, 2005 at the university of maryland center for environmental science, horn point laboratory in cambridge, md
  • was there a special reason for choosing your venue? we both work for the university of maryland and met each other here at a picnic many years ago. figured it was only fitting for us to get married here as well
  • what was your most memorable moment(s)? the entire day was awesome and everything I imagined it would be. the most memorable moments for me was walking down the aisle with my parents and seeing jeff for the first time and trying to hold myself together
  • if you had it to do over again, would you change anything and what/why?  I wouldn’t change a thing! one of the best decisions we made was choosing you as our photographer to capture the entire day for us! you’re awesome and we love you!

emily and jason were part of a large group of friends where I had shot a total of 5 wedding between them all so when going to their wedding I felt as though I was seeing old friends – which was awesome! their wedding was so fun and I wasn’t surprised, their smiles and laughter are constant and infectious when they are together :)

  • where and when were you married? we were married at the Miles River guest house in easton.
