1I have been collaborating with the lovely chrissy ehrhart, the owner and operator of zenna wellness in berlin, for over 3 years. we have worked together on aerial yoga shoots, maternity sessions, and now mother/daughter (and one son!) acro yoga. and if I’m honest, these have become my favorite. not only are the poses different and creative, but there is something about the interaction between a parent and child, working together and supporting each other, that I find so beautiful. chrissy also took out her singing bowls and gave me a short demonstration which was so magical (thanks marley!) everyone was SO wonderful to work with and I am looking forward to next time xoxo

1I love spring and this year it seems that it’s been somewhat hard fought to get here. after a really cold winter, when it seemed that the wind would never stop blowing, it’s beginning to warm up. trees are blooming, the days are longer, and if I’m honest, my allergies are giving me fits. but I digress…. to me spring has always been a time of renewal, a new beginning after the darkness of winter ~ and I couldn’t think of a better way to start this season than with a season at zenna wellness in berlin. chrissy and I have been doing aerial photo shoots together for 2 years now and they are always so much fun (see here, here, and here for our past sessions). this year, we decided to mix things up a bit and invited those who would like to do acro yoga a spin in front of the camera. to our delight, the duos who signed up for these spots were all mothers and daughters. we had so much fun working with all of them and I am looking so forward to our next sessions (ps: there may be a mother’s day session special in the works… stay tuned)

these sessions are becoming a regular here on the blog and it couldn’t make me happier! I am always in awe of the beauty and strength of our participants when we have our aerial shoots and this round was no exception. we even did a few acro poses which has my anxiously awaiting those sessions sometime in the near future. if you’ve never done aerial yoga, you should try it… at least once. I am a ‘land’ yoga devotee and to be honest it intimidated me a little bit – but I’m a big believer in giving things a try and doing it at least once and I loved it! if anything it avails a range of motion that I’ve simply not been able to achieve in my poses. and as you can see from all of the blogposts (see the other posts here and here) kids love it too! in fact chrissy offers class specifically for them and they are always full of excited young yogis :) for more information on aerial yoga and everything else offered at zenna, click here

in march I had the pleasure of photographing the first set of zenna’s aerial yoga portraits (to read how these sessions came about and what they consist of, click here). the response that zenna’s owner, chrissy, and I had was so positive that we decided to schedule another shoot a few weeks ago. like before, everyone who attended was so wonderful to work with as chrissy guided them through their poses – some had never even tried aerial yoga before and it was so cool to see them embrace the flow from each movement to the next. these sessions have become a favorite of mine.. I not only look forward to the photography, but also learning even more about this practice and meeting some truly special people along the way – I am already brainstorming for our next collaboration! I’m seeing acro… :)

April 01, 2014

when I was 11 years old, I was diagnosed with scoliosis. my initial fear was that I would have to wear one of those large and bulky braces (the only real treatment back then) and I dreaded it. my mother, always the fixer and problem solver, researched as much as she could and from a friend at her office she learned about the benefits of yoga as they pertained to my condition. during the early 80′s in syracuse I think that yoga practitioners were very few and far between.. at least mom couldn’t find one. so in addition to regular chiropractic care, mom found a book with all of the basic yoga poses. because I feared the brace that my doctor assured us was a definite possibility, I stretched, cat, cowed and downward dogged it every morning and evening. I was anything but serious about an actual yoga practice and as soon as my doctor said that things were looking pretty good, I slacked off… I was a teenager after all. fast forward many years and yoga was once again recommended to me in colorado for not only my back issues, but for overall stress relief and a peaceful mind. I quickly fell in love with the poses I once considered a chore as a kid and was just beginning to establish a practice when I moved back to the eastern shore. yoga fell to the wayside as real life happened and to be honest, I didn’t realize how much I missed (and needed) it until a place called zenna wellness was hatched. I had met my friend chrissy several years before and immediately liked her – she was so friendly, open and warm. but I had no idea as to the plans she had in store! I had started hearing the small town chit chat that always happens when something new is coming and there was rumor of a yoga studio opening in berlin – so a few weeks later during their third friday art stroll I searched out zenna and to my very happy surprise, chrissy was the owner. I went to my first class a couple of weeks later and have never left – all of the instructors are amazing and just the general vibe of the space is pretty special. I am so grateful to have found such a wonderful studio with so many lovely people that have helped me reestablish and grow my practice. in addition to zumba, pilates and tai chi, zenna also offers something that very few places do and that’s aerial yoga.. for me to try to describe it would be foolish – it’s definitely something you need to experience first hand – but from a photographer’s perspective, it’s beauty is what drew me in. so several weeks ago, chrissy and I created an event and invited people from our yoga community to sign up to come practice and get photographed. it was such a wonderful experience, I think for all of us, but I know it was for me. there was so much grace, a little cursing at me as I made the ladies hold poses a few ticks longer than they may have wanted to .. and laughter – lots and lots of laughter. due to the popularity, chrissy and I are busy making plans for round two! like zenna on facebook for updates :)

about two years ago, I changed some things up. we were entering the off season here at the studio and I wanted to dedicate that time to working on myself – part of that was rediscovering my love for yoga.. a practice I had left behind almost a decade before. little did I know then that recommitting to yoga would evolve into some of my favorite photography of this past year. to learn how these sessions began, click here. with my friend and owner of zenna wellness, chrissy ehrhart, we dipped our toes into an idea which has bloomed into something really special. I love how the movement and light work together in these images… each session we are trying new things with people who love this practice as much as we do. chrissy and I have a lot of new possibilities to explore in 2015 and we can’t wait to share them with our friends.

001 this year 15 of our couples shared the happy news with us that they were expecting.. one of them are even welcoming twins! these new parents-to-be had some really cool location ideas and we had sessions everywhere from the beaches of the chesapeake bay to nationals stadium. with the help of my dear friend and favorite yoga instructor chrissy ehrhart, owner of zenna wellness, we tried something new this year and photographed our beautiful mothers in serene aerial yoga poses. what we captured was uniquely lovely and we hope to do more of these yoga maternity sessions in the coming year. check back to the blog tomorrow for our best-of newborn post where you will get to meet some of the new additions to our GPA families.

October 24, 2014

it almost became a running joke.. trying to schedule this session. it seemed like each time that my friend amanda and I would get our schedules together and choose an evening to shoot, mother nature would step in with either rain or heavy winds and we would be forced to postpone. I met amanda and her daughter seren at zenna wellness studio in berlin. I had already photographed seren during one of our aerial yoga shoots and knew that they would be so wonderful to photograph together. finally, the stars aligned and the weather cooperated.. more than cooperated – it was one of the most beautiful evenings that I’ve worked on the beach in recent memory. as I expected, amanda and seren were so amazing to work with. in addition to being mother and daughter, they are also clearly best friends and capturing that relationship was a true joy to photograph. after we wrapped the session, the three of us relaxed, talked and laughed with our toes in the sand as the sun set. I am so happy that we finally got to do this! I had such a lovely evening with both of you xoxo
