1where to begin with this day… it was magical. it was a wedding that kristie and I had been looking forward to all spring. ever since first meeting julie and garrett, I was smitten. during their engagement session, they were already cuddling up with each other before I even had a chance to get my camera out of my bag. this is when I know. I can predict pretty accurately how the wedding day will be and julie and garret were all of ‘that’, that something that makes it so obvious that two people were meant to be, and more. they make each other laugh to the point that I don’t think they even realize that I’m there, sometime laying down in the sand to take their photograph. their attention is so clearly on each other and nothing else.. this is what it’s all about. this is love.

I met up with julie and her amazing wedding planner sheena a week before wedding day. already the three of us were stressing out about the weather. the way that everything was planned at their venue, the indian river lifesaving station and museum, decent weather was a must. although a plan b was and always is in place, I wanted so badly for everything to be perfect for julie and garrett. but has summer has a tendency to do in these parts, the forecast on the big day was iffy.. at best. I met up with julie and her girls at the salon while kris went to meet garrett at the cottage that they had rented for the day. everyone was busy.. but calm, happy, and excited. minor traffic scares and the thunderstorm threat didn’t seem to bother anyone and the schedule was like clockwork.

once everyone arrived at the museum, we all decided that it was a go! they were getting married on the beach as planned. the reception was unlike one I think I have ever photographed. no detail was too small, they had thought of everything and it was executed perfectly by little miss lovely. all of the guests were escorted over the dune walk and to the lovely ceremony location. as I was down on the beach, awaiting the procession, it happened. boom! crack! and a showing of lightning in the distance. as the guests retreated to the tent, I went back to check on julie. this is what I love about her. a lot of people would just dissolve.. after months of planning, to have it all turned on it’s head at the last minute is pretty heartbreaking. but as I entered the room, julie was all smiles, ‘this will probably be better’ she said ‘and the tent is beautiful!’.

for the rest of the day, it was all beautiful. from the first moment that julie and garrett’s eyes met, to the toasts full of laughter and happy tears. every moment was one fully shared with all of their friends and family. kristie and I are so very happy for all of you and wish you SO much happiness in you life together. in was an honor to share in your love and your day! xoxo

1it all started several months ago with a facebook message…. ‘are you available for a couple of hours on july third?’ my friend shelli asked. to which I responded ‘yep, I should be. I’m not going out of town.’ innocent enough. and then she told me.. she was getting married! see I have known shelli for almost 15 years. when I decided to start photographing weddings, I signed up for a local wedding show and rented myself a booth. I was nervous, obviously. having never participated in anything like this, I brought what I thought I might need and pieced it all together the best I could. I walked around to check everyone else out ~ and I saw shelli. her booth was that of a seasoned veteran who had been doing this for awhile and it blew me away. custom built display walls, gorgeous canvases, and stacks of colorful and ornate wedding albums. she must have caught me with eyes wide open and walked over to introduce herself. I was hesitant to say that I was a photographer.. I don’t know why. maybe it was because I was unsure of how she would respond, or maybe it was because I was new and pretty clueless. probably a bit of both… I told her anyway. she smiled wide and basically took me under her wing a little bit that day. we later found out that we both attended MICA (maryland instate, college of art) and our bound grew even closer. over the years, both of our lives have changed and we don’t see each other nearly as much as we used to, but when we do, she is still a cherished colleague and a trusted friend. so now she was getting married – and she wanted me to photograph it. I was thrilled! shelli and shawn planned a daytime wedding at the green hill country club and as I drove up, I was so grateful for weather. for july, it was almost chilly! and as I entered the room where shelli was getting ready, I knew I was in for a ride. first, let’s talk about this dress. she had sent me an inspiration photo weeks before but to see how it came together in person was amazing! her friend had hand sewn every layer, every detail, and I couldn’t have picked any other dress that reflected the beautiful spirit of my friend like this one did. and then there were her friends… as each one of her girls arrived, shelli would have to look away before the tears started. practically every time that she would look at her daughter, her eyes would water, and the frantic dabbing to keep her eye makeup in check would start. but she couldn’t help it, and it was lovely. I met shawn for the first time as I went downstairs to the ‘guy room’ and immediately saw that he was a perfect partner for shelli. he is kind, warm, and hysterical. ‘how is she doing?’ were the first words he said to me. as the ceremony began, shelli and shawn’s touches were everywhere. from the processional music and tokens of love, to the unity sand that the poured with emma. I couldn’t be happier for all of you and I was so honored to be a small part of your day. I wish you all of the love and happiness in the world! xoxo

001I had every intention of meeting courtney and jason well before their wedding day. we tried.. we really did! due to jason’s service in the military, he was only home twice and we scheduled their engagement session ~ twice. both times it rained and was far too nasty to attempt the session we wanted to do in annapolis. if I’m honest, given the weather forecast the week before their wedding, I feared that our history would repeat, but fortunately the day was beautiful! when I got to the home of courtney’s mother, it was courtney who answered the door and she hugged me as if she had known me forever (which was kind of true, actually :) ) she was as lovely in person as she had been during our many conversations and was very ready to get this show on the road and marry her love. but right as we were about to leave for the church, her dress broke. really.. it broke. the thread broke on one of her straps and nothing short of a needle and thread would fix it. some brides may melt down at this moment.. after all, the limo had just arrived, but courtney, while a little concerned, just went with it. a phone call later, the amazing ladies from the bridal boutique met her at the church and within seconds, all was well. courtney would have gone down that aisle regardless.. this much I know is true. because her love, her life, and her future husband were waiting. I alway admire couples like courtney and jason ~ they fall in love and then because of circumstances beyond their control, they have to spend weeks, months, and sometime years apart. and yet their love and commitment endure. it somehow makes it sweeter.. as though true love could get better than it is. but as courtney walked down the aisle with her parents, her eyes were focused solely on jason and his on her. jason’s grandfather was the officiant of the ceremony and as he spoke to courtney and jason, the words he spoke were the same that he had spoken to jason’s parents when they were married years before. needless to day, the emotion of the moment was lost on no one. and as they exited the church under an arch of sabers raised by jason’s friends, they kissed and stepped out into tomorrow. together. forever. at last. laura and I are so happy for the two of you and absolutely loved spending such a lovely day with you! we wish you all of the love and happiness in your adventures together! xoxo

ac-001when i met with audrey + chris earlier this spring on the banks of the choptank river, i couldn’t help but be excited for their big day! these two are so laid back, and so much fun to be around, plus their enthusiasm for their wedding was contagious. both of them are advocates for environmental sustainability, and this was evident in all aspects of their big day from their gorgeous location on the river, custom centerpieces featuring wildlife in the area, natural local decor, and one of my favorite details: handmade paper bowties for the groomsmen. even dog of honor, gaius, wore one! one other reason i love this couple is their love of craft beer, which was also woven into their day through details like hops for boutonnieres, and Nobel Rot for The Blessing Over Wine during their beautiful ceremony. so, on this craft beer note: the groom’s brother brewed a special beer for their wedding – choptank kolsch – that everyone was raving about! and of course, guests could tap that beer into their custom made pint glasses along with several others beers by Dogfish Head Brewery from the beer bar made by the groom’s sister! the fact that they happily referred to their cocktail hour as ‘happy hour’ made me love this couple even more. in addition to the great brews, they set up yard games for guests to play – and of course these two got in on the mix! all during the day from portraits to their sparkler send off, audrey + chris were just so at ease and simply having the best time together and with their loved ones. it was so clear for me to see why the chorus from family and friends that night was that they were perfect for each other. i am so, so happy for you two and wish you all the best on your adventures in europe and a lifetime of happiness together! xo! raise a glass to their fabulous vendors:

1brooke and john robert are just one of those couples that make you smile. when they are together, they clearly make each other laugh all the time and their playful nature is infectious. I had already photographed the wedding of one of brooke’s bridesmaids, kerry, so I knew that this was a fun group. as I went upstairs to check in on brooke, she was a little nervous.. but SO excited. the weather was absolutely perfect and as we all headed to the church, it was the ideal day to get married! the ceremony was equal parts of emotional moments and joyful laughter.. the ring bearer got a little creative with his ring pillow as he was twirling and tossing his ring pillow to entertain the guests (no rings were lost during his tricks :) ) and once brooke and john robert kissed their way into man and wife, cheers erupted throughout the sanctuary. the party continued into the reception where kristie and I had the best time capturing so many fun and timeless moments. we are SO happy for you both and wish you all the happiness in the world.
