1I have a big and beautiful group of girlfriends ~ and between them, I have photographed 4 weddings, several engagement sessions, dogs sessions, oodles of family sessions, and now 3 newborn sessions. I first met erin and nick through my friend nettie and when they hired me to photograph their wedding, I was so happy. they are such a lovely couple and working with them was such a joy. like me, they are over the moon for their pup, penny. in fact, penny has been in every session that we’ve shot, including wedding day! there has also been a theme with me and erin that has become a little joke within our group ~ whenever we are together, she cries. these are happy tears of course, and have nothing really to do with me, just what’s going on around me ~ but it happens. every time. so when I learned that they were expecting, I was thrilled… and when my friend megan said that they wanted to surprise them with a session from me I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do. as I entered their home, I spotted jack in his little rocker. he was just waking up from a nap and his big eyes looked up at me, all bright and shiny. I turned around and saw penny resting in a chair. like sampson, she’s older and takes a little longer to get from place to place, but she still has that personality that won me over years ago. we started the session in the nursery that they had so lovingly created. almost everything was either made or repurposed specifically for jack and as the morning light illuminated the room, I just had to sit back and watch. I have always admired how erin and nick are as a couple and the love they share, and as parents it’s multiplied beyond measure. jack’s favorite place in nestled up close in their arms. it was such a wonderful morning and to my surprise, erin didn’t cry. she just beamed and it was such a beautiful thing to capture. I love all of you and am so very happy for you xoxo

1it’s hard to put into words how I feel about these photos. I look at them and I see so much history, so much change. it’s tangible proof of just how quickly life happens and how new beginnings blossom. I’ve known bryan for most of his life, ever since he was an infant. in fact, in many ways, he’s the closest thing to a little brother that I have. together we have experienced many of the ups and downs of life. his grandmother was one of my absolute favorite people on the planet and his parents have stood by my side through my best and worst times. bryan drove me to my wedding and was there for me talk/vent/cry to when my parents were sick. he is one of my constants and always has been. he and his wife melissa went to college together but it wasn’t until later that they reunited and knew that they were meant to be together ~ sealing it by taking their vows on the beaches of jamaica. they lived in DC during the early days of their marriage but moved down here on the shore and recently purchased a home in snow hill ~ in fact, they live so close that I can practically see their house from my office window. when I learned that they were expecting, all I could think of was how thrilled everyone would be by this happy news, I was over the moon! and when it was time for flynn’s first photos, I was so honored to photograph them. melissa and bryan are so clearly meant to parents – there is such an ease and comfort about them when they are with their son and their happiness is beautiful. I can’t wait to see the journey of this little man and all that he will become year after year. I love you all xoxo

001kris and scott are one of those couples where you just know.. as soon as you meet them, you are certain that they are a meant-to-be match. initially, they both contacted me regarding my availability. whatever question that scott might ask, kris would follow up on – a truly collaborative process. and they are funny! when I get a couple’s sense of humor from the first email, I know that I am in for a wonderful experience. for this engagement session, they only had one requirement ~ that it take place in annapolis. they are also getting married in the state capital and it is a place full of meaning and memories for them both. I met them at the city dock and immediately we hit it off. as we started to stroll the streets of downtown, kris kept pointing out historic facts about certain buildings and streets. I thought I knew quite a bit about annapolis, but I’ve got nothing on my bride! they so clearly love each other and love this city which made for such an ideal session. I am looking so forward to working together again and getting to know you both better ~ if our first session was any indication as to what to expect on wedding day, I am in for a treat! 001a 2 3 4 4a 5 6 7 8 9 ks-062 ks-092 ks-106

1it was over 4 years ago that they were married… I had met my dear friend susan just a few months before the big day. she had told me that she was getting married in jamaica, to which I replied ‘amazing!’. a few weeks later, we were working on a shoot together and she asked me in passing if I traveled… ummmm, hell yes I do! then came the facebook message that I will never forget… ‘do you have a passport?’ before I knew it, kristie and I were making travel plans for the island. while in jamaica, I really got to know susan and jonathan – although we shared many of the same friends, I had never spent any time with them and the more I got to know them, the more I loved about them. they are such an amazing couple! and ever since we got back to reality back here at home, our friendship has remained. in the years since, susan’s daughter, samantha, has grown into such a lovely young lady and has become the best big sister to camden… the newest addition to the redden family. I met them all out on the family farm and we had a beautiful evening to work with. I always have so much fun spending time with them and once we wrapped up the session, susan and I caught up as the sun went down. I am so grateful to call you friends and was so happy to capture this time in your family story – love you! xoxo

it had been almost 14 years since the last time that I saw my dear friend stephanie.. and let me tell you, a lot has changed since then. back then, we were both living in boulder and working at a restaurant called the med. I had worked in many restaurants before then and had made a lot of friends, but there was something about the staff at the med that was different. we became family and some of my best friends to this day were made there. stephanie was no exception – from the first time we met, we clicked and spent many nights after shift discussing the ways of the world. I left colorado somewhat unexpectedly and lost touch with a few people along the way but then came facebook. by the time that stephanie and I became ‘friends’, she had moved to new england and was about to be engaged to a man named sean. soon after their wedding, they made the move to alexandria and although we had talked a few times about meeting up, it never worked out. then the news came… they were expecting! and once their beautiful son, lawrence arrived, plans began for a session.. and a reunion :) we had initially intended to shoot outside at a local park, but the winds were relentless and their apartment had tons of lovely light, so we stayed put. after hugging and chatting and hugging some more, I was introduced to her son. with his bright eyes and easy smile he had me from the get go – so adorable and so happy! I really loved getting to know sean too – my friend is a very special girl and she has found a perfect match with her husband ~ they were made for each other. once we started to wrap up, I didn’t want to go. it seemed that we only scratched surface of these past years.. so many events, both big and small. but as this little boy grows, I plan to document their family as much as I can. their story is such a happy one xoxo

I could write pages and pages about katie and james… really, I could. because the day I met katie at an annapolis wedding show, many years ago, I had no idea. the studio was still pretty young and I initially viewed it as any other job I had done. there were advertising decisions, the purchasing of the appropriate gear for the photography I was specializing in.. I had a lot of lists. and while it was dream come true and I was doing something that I loved, something that I had loved so much that I had chosen to go to college for it – I didn’t know that now that I had entered into the field of wedding photography, that this was a different deal all together. when you are with people during the happiest, most joyful, sometimes scariest and  just simply frustrating times of their lives, you get to know them on a level I never had experienced as a professional photographer before. as you shoot an engagement session, you see how he will brush the hair out of her eyes and kiss her forehead without a word from me. you will see her grab his hand as we go from one location to another and they snuggle in. you will listen to stories of how they met and you will share a little about your life too. as the wedding day gets closer, you may hear the frustration from your client (who is talking to you like an old friend) about weather back up plans and catering woes. then the wedding day comes and your bride may wander over to you when she needs a break from the meeting and greeting and you sit there with her as she takes her wedding day in. katie and james were one of my first experiences of a random meeting turning into friendship that I never expected but am so grateful for. I’ve worked with them, their friends, their families, and even at their workplace many times since their big day. we’ve shared concerts and dinners and silly back and forth texts about nothing. I love them. it’s that simple. so when I found out that they were expecting, I was over the moon. once jake arrived, I got a text from katie saying something to the effect of ‘okay, so how do we do these photos.’ it was just a given that I would have the honor of taking their son’s first portraits and it filled me with joy. I am so happy for all of you and I words don’t really do justice to how much I value our friendship and what it’s brought into my life. I can’t wait to capture the many milestones and the journey of your family xoxo

I knew that julie and garrett would be super fun to work with once I received their getting-to-know-you questionnaire. garrett had included both of their families in such a thoughtful proposal that took a lot of doing! to hear julie tell it (who had no idea of what was going on) is hysterical – she almost missed the whole thing! together they have fun doing so many things.. and top of the list is spending time with their pup avery. so it was only fitting that avery was along for the ride our whole session. we started at a beautiful church outside of berlin that holds a lot of meaning for the family ~ with it’s historic interior and beautiful grounds, it was ideal. we then headed to the beach and avery went nuts! it’s obviously a favorite place for them all. the whole time, julie and garrett couldn’t help but make each other laugh and smile.. they are just so easy, comfortable and fun. such a wonderful couple to photograph! I am looking SO forward to your wedding and the opportunity to work with you both again ~ thank you for an awesome morning!

jennifer is the sister of one of my favorite brides, diane. during the time I spent with her at diane and joe’s wedding, I remember her being so much fun and really nice ~ she also introduced me to her boys, channing and conner. after this session I went back and looked at the photos from the wedding and even though it seems like yesterday, time has definitely passed. the boys are bigger, more outgoing, and hysterical. although there was a little shyness at the start, it wasn’t too long after that where the giggles happened. jennifer’s grandmother had come along and the boys would light up when she called their names. I had such a lovely morning with all of you and look forward to our next session!

it seems as though when the holiday family portrait season rolls around, most of my session are with past clients ~ former wedding couples and families that I’ve worked with for years. but this year, more than any other, I have been hired to photograph a lot of families for the first time and I’ve been loving it! as much as I do love seeing how the families of my fabulous clients have changed and the kids have grown from year to year, I really like meeting new people! it’s one of my favorite parts about my job. so when jay contacted me and asked if I was available to photograph her and her husband david’s family, I was looking so forward to meeting them. we had a warmer than average day at pemberton park and were able to take advantage of the last little bit of color on the trees. the kids were so great! baby lilly would light up as soon as she was held by her older siblings juliana and ben – she’s such a happy little girl. I had such a lovely morning with all of you and am looking so forward to our next session.

I love photographing anniversary sessions. there’s something about a couple who has eased their way into married life that is just a little different than when they are full of anticipation for their wedding day. there’s a comfort, a familiarity, and even more love than the day that they said ‘i do’. this was the second time this year that I’ve had the pleasure of shooting one of these sessions with a couple whose wedding I didn’t photograph and when morgan contacted me, I could tell, just from our initial emailing, that this was going to be a wonderful session. we had several sessions scheduled before we were able to get together a few weeks ago, but it was definitely worth the wait. as I met them in snow hill, their retriever, josie, came bounding out of their back seat and I suddenly had a new best friend.. puppy hugs are the best! we had a beautiful evening as fall was making it’s exit for the year with it’s beautiful light. I had such a lovely time with all of you and look forward to working with you again!
