I suppose that the title of this post should actually be ‘christina + jake are married.. again!’ because this lovely couple were already husband and wife the morning that I drove up to northern maryland for their beautiful wedding. when I met with christina several months beforehand, we chatted about how they wanted to have an intimate celebration to reaffirm their commitment to each other with their children, their families, and friends. the setting couldn’t have been more ideal for such an occasion. although it began to pour once I met up with christina at her mother’s house that morning, by the time their barn ceremony began, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. with their kids by their sides, they promised forever together again and sealed it with a kiss. this summer is turning out to be the season of the serenade and I am loving it! shortly after the toasts were made, jake took to the mic to sing his bride a song and later on, the two of them became a duet as christina joined in. there was so much love and laughter the whole evening as old friends reunited and all of the kids took over the dance floor… and of course there was christina and jake who took any chance they could to share a slow dance, even during a ‘fast’ song.. it’s clear that these two get ‘remarried’ every day of their life together. I wish you all so much love and joy!

if you know me at all, it may surprise you to learn that for a good portion of my life, I was terrified of dogs. not just mildly afraid when they barked, not merely nervous when they ran my way, but an all out ‘I-am-not-coming-to-your-awesome-birthday-party-because-you-have-a-dog’ terror when it came to man’s best friend. although my mom said that I was once nipped by an excitable cocker spaniel, there was really no basis for my behavior ~ but there it was. then one day, I met a cute guy (note: for better or worse, many of the important decisions I made during my twenties began with those 5 words) and he had a dog who was expecting her first litter. did I want to come meet his dog? ummmm… no. but after peppering him with questions, I learned that she was so close to delivering, that she rarely moved other than to eat, drink, and go outside. so I took my chances, and went. this dog could have cared less if I was there, let alone get close enough to make me nervous, so I exhaled. a few days later, the puppies were born and I spent the next two months visiting almost daily and doing what I could to help these 12 (twelve!) lab/great dane pups as they started navigating this world. it should come as no surprise, although it did to me at the time, that I fell head over heels with one of them. he had been nicknamed dempsey due to his rough and tumble nature and when it was time to release the puppies to their new homes, dempsey came home with me and my love affair with big dogs began. then about 5 years ago, I started getting more and more requests from my clients for their dogs to be included in their sessions – esessions, family shoots, and even wedding days were made even more special when the four-legged members of the family joined in and I loved it. so much so, that we started santa paws – easily our most anticipated and popular sessions of the year. we have worked with shelters, kennels, and even the baltimore ravens ~ with the goal being to raise funds for animals in need. what I trying to say, is that I know dogs. not only to I know dogs, but I love to interact with them, and I know how to photograph them – huge, small, old, or young. super friendly or standoffish – there isn’t a dog that I haven’t been able to work with and they always leave me smiling and smitten by the end of the session. but a cat? now that’s a whole other deal… I met kimberly at the wedding of meredith and josh at the beginning of this year’s summer season. soon after, I received an email from her requesting a session with her cat, sarah. I love cats, I really do – as a result of my no dogs allowed policy as a kid, my mom and I had several and I loved them all dearly. but when working with animals, I had become accustomed to being in charge.. or at least something resembling control. with a cat, I knew that the game was going to change, but I was looking forward to it. as kimberly welcomed me into their home, I went upstairs to meet sarah. unfortunately, she has been facing some health challenges so typically a stranger means some sort of treatment, and she was understandably cautious. kimberly and I sat and talked, letting her get used to me and my camera, getting a little closer, bit by bit. she sat in her favorite place in the sun and began to relax. I followed as she cooled down in the hallway, went to another room to perch from another familiar spot, and snuggled up with kimberly. I just took her lead to capture sarah being sarah and it was lovely.

this seems to be the summer of the one year old. I have had the pleasure of photographing so many adorable toddlers as they hit that milestone this year and I couldn’t be happier about it – it’s such a fun age! so when ashley contacted me about scheduling a session with her husband, steve, the family dog, finley, and their daughter, audrey, I couldn’t wait to work with them. we met on a beautiful and uncharacteristically mild summer morning in lewes ~ ashley had suggested the zwaanendael park and it was a perfect location. the first to arrive to the session were steve, audrey, and finley and I immediately fell in love with this big and beautiful golden retriever… such a sweet boy! miss audrey was smiling up at me and starting showing off for the camera from the get go :) ashley arrived soon thereafter and I had such a lovely morning with all of them. they are a family who plays together, blows bubbles together, and laughs together as finley snuggles up close. I hope I have the opportunity to work with all of you again soon – thank you for such a fun session!

001Ever since I met Danielle and John for their consult in March, I couldn’t wait for their wedding. They are such a laid back couple, and as they described their intimate wedding at a beautiful private home in McLean, VA – I couldn’t wait to photograph it. Driving up to the venue on their wedding day… it did not disappoint. The venue was just as they described it – gorgeous stone work, beautiful gardens, and a pool scattered with flowers to enjoy cocktails by. I was greeted by John at the door and he had this calm ease about him as he showed me around the property before he set off to take care of the logistics for the day. I met Danielle as she was getting ready with her girls and the excitement for the day was ringing through the air. With the final details in place, I walked Danielle down to meet her groom for their first look.   I love a first look – it’s one of my favorite parts of a couple’s day. The nervous excitement as the groom waits for the tap on his shoulder, the brides expression of delight as she approaches him, and best of all, when their eyes lock for the first time, just moments before the ceremony. Danielle and John’s first look was so sweet – they are just so clearly in love and in awe of each other and this was all so evident as they shared those first moments together.   After cooling off inside for a bit, Danielle + John held a beautiful ceremony in front of 35 of their closest family and friends with their dear friend officiating. As they exchanged their vows and rings, you could see everyone’s happiness for them radiating, with laughs and happy tears being shed as they committed to one another as husband and wife.   The celebrations continued into the night with heartfelt toasts and LOTS of dancing! This crew clearly loves having a great time, and every way I turned, family and friends were laughing, smiling, and taking in the evening. It was such a perfect day. Danielle + John, I’m so glad that I got to meet you and am so honored to have been able to capture your special day. Enjoy your honeymoon and congratulations! xoxo!

Cheers to the fabulous vendors that made Danielle + John’s day possible!

I know it shouldn’t come as a surprise.. but after many years of working with some wonderful families, I still never cease to be amazed by the growth of my littlest clients from session to session. I guess you could say that I ‘met’ vivian the first time that I met her parents during their maternity session last summer. soon after I was sent the happy news that she had arrived and I headed to DC to meet this beautiful little girl in person for her newborn session. her parents, skye and stephen, contacted me about heading to the beach to celebrate her first birthday and I was looking so forward to seeing them all. as they pulled up into the parking lot to meet me, I glanced in the backseat to say hello. those curls! those lashes! that smile! vivian had grown into a giggly, adorable, and very happy toddler. we headed to the beach and shared such a lovely morning as she explored.. working hard to get used to the sand beneath her feet. I can’t wait until our next session!

she had me at torpedo factory.. he had me at foo fighters. I had the pleasure of meeting kara and brandon for their engagement session at her parent’s beach house outside of milton, delaware and although kara and I had corresponded many times leading up to the session, actually meeting them was so cool. they are so nice, so funny, and so genuine that we were soon cracking jokes and having such a lovely evening. they are getting married late next month at the torpedo factory in alexandria which I think is by far one of the most unique venues I’ve ever seen and after spending this evening with them, I think it’s the perfect place for them to get married. as we were chatting, brandon told me that they were going to the foo fighters concert that weekend which also featured some other musicians that were featured on dave grohl’s series ‘sonic highways’. if you know me, you know that I have acquired a small obsession with that program.. if you haven’t watched it and you love music, run to your DVR now! so many times it happens – that click when you meet new people and everything fits and I am so happy to have met such an awesome couple. I am looking SO forward to your wedding day!

I have met future clients in some pretty random places.. standing in line at starbucks, in yoga class, my chiropractor’s waiting room. conversations begin and sometimes they result in me photographing a session or wedding day. some of these people have become dear friends and that’s one of my favorite things about this career ~ the relationships that have been built. but it always begins with just a little leap of faith.. and rarely has this been as true as it was with jocelyn and jon. my friend heather, president of HJ planners, is one of the premier wedding and event planners in the DC area. she and I have worked together on many weddings, but we met long before she started her company when I photographed the wedding of her mother. heather has an uncanny ability to not only match the aesthetics of client and vendor, but she also makes complimentary connections once she really gets to know their personalties. so one evening, she was ‘off the clock’ and attending an event with her managing director of global operations, kha thai vo, and she met jon. and as they spoke, jon shared of his recent relocation to minnesota and his upcoming wedding.. it was all a whirlwind, but he had a humor about it all that made heather think of me. soon contact information was exchanged and I ended up on the phone with jocelyn a week later. I immediately liked her – this girl had a lot on her plate.. a move, a new baby, and a wedding. any one of those alone could be overwhelming to most people, but jojo was calm, so sweet, and hysterical. they were getting married at the grand view lodge on gull lake, about 2 hours outside of minneapolis. she said that it reminded her of an updated version of the resort in dirty dancing, and once I entered through the drive, I totally got it. this place is a little town, all on it’s own and it is stunning. this was my first time to minnesota and I was smitten. the warm sun with a cool breeze, the tranquil lake and sand between my toes.. it was an ideal spot for a destination wedding. my first morning there, I headed to the golf course to meet jojo and jon for the first time and even before I could manage to say hello, I was wrapped up in big bear hugs. we had all waited for what seemed like forever to meet and it was like being reunited with old friends. I also got to meet their adorable daughter, hunter. I joined jon and his guys out on the golf course before heading back to get ready for the rehearsal. I assume it’s typical in the land of 10,000 lakes, but it’s the first time that my mode of transportation to dinner has been by boat. with the ladies in one pontoon, and the guys in another, champagne was poured, toasts were made, and there was a lot of catching up as we made our way across the water. the next morning, I arrived at jocelyn’s cabin where they were getting ready, folks were buzzing in and out, so excited about the day ahead. as I led jon to the location of their first look, he appeared calm and collected, but as soon as he laid eyes on his bride, his composure was gone and tears ran down his cheeks. I really can’t even begin to put into words what this wedding weekend meant to me – jojo and jon are two of the most genuine and kind people that I’ve ever met. I felt like family even before I got on the plane to minnesota. I am so grateful that heather made this connection and for the new friendships that I made with so many people. I wish you so much happiness.. you are such a special couple and I know that your life with hunter will continue to be so full of joy as each new chapter begins. thank you so much for inviting me to capture such a lovely weekend that I will remember forever. xoxo
