if I’m honest, the first time I met lindsey and jeremy I thought they were already married…. and this was years ago. I first met lindsey when she was working at the flower shop that jeremy’s mother, sue ann, owned. sue ann had become a dear friend of mine and whenever I was in berlin, I’d stop in to see her. usually lindsey was there too.. and jeremy. individually they were both such nice and warm people, but together they were like two pieces of a puzzle that just fit. when sue ann and I decided to share office/studio space I learned that lindsey and jeremy had been together since high school and I thought that they were such a great couple.. like they had been made for each other. in the years since, I’ve photographed the weddings of almost all of lindsey’s best friends and kept secretly hoping the next would be her and jeremy’s big day. then last christmas, in front of lindsey’s whole family, jeremy asked her to be his bride. it was obvious that they were already committed to each other and had been since they met, but it was time to make it ‘official’ and through happy tears, lindsey said yes. when I got the call, I did a little dance around the studio and couldn’t wait to meet with her to hear all about it. they had chosen brittland estate as their venue.. one of my favorites! and lindsey spoke excitedly about the decor, music, and custom made dresses. as laura and I drove to chestertown the day of the wedding, I felt like I was going to a family event instead of photographing a job. I had worked with almost everyone in her bridal party and they had all become some of my dearest friends. as I walked into the bridal suite, I was greeted with so many hugs and despite the dreary weather outside, in the suite, joy and excitement filled the room. lindsey’s dress was just perfect! it reflected her style and was complimented with some of the coolest bridesmaids gowns I have ever seen. my friends were buzzing about, getting all of the finishing touches together as laura went to join jeremy and his guys. meanwhile, most of us kept looking outside. for the late fall, a lot of the foliage was still on display throughout the stunning property at brittland, but the drizzling rain simply wouldn’t end and the fate of the ceremony location was up in the air. lindsey and jeremy shared their first look on the upstairs landing and all of their love and history shined through their eyes and the rest of the world fell away. in that moment, I couldn’t have been happier for my friends. mother nature must have known that something special was about to happen as well, because she started to cooperate. while the rain didn’t stop altogether until later in the evening, it tapered off enough for the ceremony to be held on the back lawn. as they shared vows that they had written themselves, lindsey and jeremy took another step into their journey together, surrounded by the love of all of their friends and family. to say that I’m happy for you is such an understatement..  I am so grateful that I was there to share in such a special day! laura and I wish you so much happiness, joy, laughter, and dancing as you continue in this beautiful life that you’ve made together. love you both! xoxo

every year, at about this time, I get a call from the vankirk girls… and I am always SO happy. one, it means that it’s time for our annual photo shoot… and two, I know that I am going to be able to spend some time with two of my favorite people on the planet. in 2011, lexie and payton’s mother, kristen, contacted me about doing a session with her girls. a lot of times, girls the ages that lexie and payton were at the time can be a little shy and reserved when getting photographed… but not these two! as soon as we met – pardon the camera pun – we just clicked. they were so much fun and wonderful to work with.. whether individually or together, they were giggly, goofy, lovely, and totally themselves in front of my lens. and because I know it will make them cringe, below is a photo from our first session :) if you’d like to take a trip down memory lane, all of our sessions are here, here, herehere, here, and here

in the years since, they have worked with us for some modeling and editorial jobs as well as our annual shoot together. one thing we can’t seem to get together is scheduling when it’s warm.. it seems that every year, once all of our schedules get aligned, it’s the coldest day of the year. but what I love about them is that there is never a complaint or even an acknowledgement.. we just start shooting and the weather doesn’t seem to matter. this year was no exception – we met at the inlet to shoot on the jetty and the wind was howling! I parked in the lot and soon after, the girls pulled up – payton was driving! of course she was.. they’re both old enough to drive, but this was the first time that their mother hadn’t driven and once again I was reminded of how quickly time passes. cute little girls grow into beautiful young women who drive.. and have boyfriends..and go to college (yikes!). but one thing that has never changed is the lovely nature of these two. lexie and payton are easily two of the kindest, funniest, and most genuine people I have ever met and I love them both so much. I think they already know this, but they are stuck with me…. senior portraits, sister sessions, their weddings and beyond – they’ve got a photographer, and friend, for life xoxoxox

the first time I spoke with sarah, she told me all about her wedding location.. her family farm. her dad has lived on this property his whole life and it’s also where sarah and sac live. she told me about the property, the barns, and the horses and I could picture it, she was so descriptive. typically I like to shoot a couple’s engagement session somewhere other than their wedding venue so that we can work with different locales and mix it up.. if the wedding is in baltimore or dc, shooting the e-session at the beach can be fun, etc. but because sarah had expressed their desire to include their dogs (kash and my new best friend, gulliver) and horses in the photos, the farm seemed perfect – and it was! and the really cool thing is that as beautiful as it was the day of their session, it’s going to look a lot different with everything in bloom for their wedding. then there is sarah and zac.. within minutes, I knew that my job was going to be a breeze! they are such a natural fit and so awesome together  - they were always cuddled up, laughing, and didn’t stop looking or smiling at each other. I had so much fun with you and fell in love with your farm.. I can’t wait until next year!

a lot has changed for linda and dan since their wedding over three years ago – the most exciting, of course, is the arrival of their son, bennett. linda contacted me a couple of months ago regarding a family session and I was looking so forward to seeing all of them. we met at quiet waters park on a beautiful afternoon and after they got out of their car, I got to meet bennett for the first time. one thing is for sure…. he’s got his mother’s gorgeous eyes! and after we started shooting, it was obvious that he also has the same warm personality shared by his parents – he wasn’t shy at all about looking directly at me and rarely stopped smiling. it was really nice to catch up with linda and dan as we walked the trails of the park – it’s hard to believe that it’s been so long, but bennett is giggling and walking (almost!) proof that time does indeed march on and I was so happy to capture this small moment in their family story. I had a wonderful time and am looking forward to seeing you all again!

there is something about a DC wedding that never fails to inspire me… whenever I start to get close to the city, I just know that something special is about to happen. and as kristie and I pulled up to the willard for catherine and ben’s wedding, I knew that we were in for an extraordinary day. I had spoken at length with catherine over the phone, but this was the first time I would meet both her and ben and I couldn’t wait! during our conversations, I learned that their beloved dog, carla, would be participating in the day’s festivities – which I always love :) catherine also told me a beautiful story about her wedding gown… her mother is a breast cancer survivor and as part of a fundraiser, catherine purchased her gown in support of the charity. it was very clear that as much as this day was about the two of them, it was also so important to catherine and ben that their friends and families were celebrated and honored for everything they meant to them. catherine was finishing up getting ready as I got to the bridal suite and her friends were excitedly helping with all of the last minute details before her first look with ben. it wasn’t long after that carla was brought to the room and catherine happily got down on the floor, gorgeous with her gown and veil on.. mind you, and loved up on her pup. the first look was in the grand hallway of the willard and as catherine walked down the steps to meet her groom, the typically very busy space stood still. from that point on, through the emotional ceremony and into the lively reception, catherine and ben began their next chapter together as husband and wife. their friends and families were so friendly and clearly so happy for the two of them. as readings were read during the ceremony and toasts were given at the reception, one thing kept shining through… that catherine and ben were meant to be together – everybody knew this and their collective joy filled the day. I am so happy for you both and wish you so much happiness and love!

1 it seems, at least to me, that some of the coolest experiences are hatched at the most random times… connect the dots during a everyday conversation and suddenly you’re traveling south! this is how I ended up in charleston to photograph what ended up being, by far, one of my favorite weddings of the year. I first met adrianne when she was a bridesmaid at my friend kate’s wedding – and although I wasn’t able to spend a lot if time with her that day, what I did remember was that adrianne was such nice and warm person (and she kept kate calm during some stressful moments :) ). since her wedding day, kate and I have worked on a lot of other sessions.. anniversary, maternity, newborn, etc. and it was during our last session with her son, trey, that kate asked me if I knew any photographers in charleston that I could recommend. she had my attention. charleston is easily one of my favorite places on earth and I hadn’t been there in a long time. kate told me that adrianne and jimmy, after considering a large local wedding, had decided to wed in charleston with just family and a few friends. I told kate I knew someone who could photograph the wedding and she started digging in her purse for a pen… no need as she obviously already had my information. ‘really?!’ she said “you’d go to south carolina?’ ummmmm…. yeah!!! the next day I heard from adrianne and quickly we formed a plan. I was looking so forward to spending more time with them during their e-session in OC where I heard all about their wedding plans and as the days wound down to their wedding, I couldn’t wait to see them. as soon as I got to the lowndes grove plantation, I marveled over this stunning location. the venue was situated on the banks of the river and the ceremony had been set up under giant, old trees.. spanish moss lazily swaying from the branches. janet, of JVM events, had designed the reception area to compliment the location and it was beautiful. as I entered the bridal suite, I was welcomed with a wonderful hug from adrianne’s mom as the bride got ready. don’t get me wrong.. I love big weddings, but there is something about keeping it small and intimate that I adore. it’s personal, it’s emotional, and it’s lovely. as adrianne walked down the aisle to jimmy, I don’t think that there wasn’t a single person who didn’t shed a few happy tears. adrianne and jimmy are that couple.. two people who are just so perfectly matched. you can see it when they look at each other, hear it when they laugh together, and just feel it when you’re with them. the whole evening, they rarely left each other’s side and when they did, all it took was a glance across the room.. no words were needed. their friends and families toasted them, celebrated them and loved on them like crazy – it was so lovely to be a part of and to photograph. they all made me feel so welcome and it simply couldn’t have been more perfect. adrianne and jimmy, I am so grateful that you invited me charleston, that you gave me the honor of photographing such a special day, and that I have several new members of my extended family. 1 when I first met jamie and drew, it was at their maternity session at wye island. they were both clearly so excited about becoming parents for the first time and I was happy that after their baby arrived, I would be seeing them again. jamie contacted me not too long after to share the happy news – miss hattie had arrived! I got to their house where I was greeted by their first ‘baby’, pup ruby. hattie was in her nursery, happily awake and beautiful! the whole session she never fussed.. just calm and happy as jamie and drew held her. as I can’t help but doing if a dog is in the family, I had ruby hop up on the bed with the family for a few and she posed like a rockstar :) I am so happy for all of you and can’t wait to see you again! 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 12a 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 22

there’s pretty much nothing cuter than a baby sitting in a pile of pumpkins, so when laura and ben decided to do their next grow-with-me session with their daughter, aria, at weber’s farm in parkville, I was really excited. kristie photographed laura and ben’s wedding last spring as well as aria’s newborn session and from what she shared with me about this adorable family, I was looking so forward to meeting all of them. I met up with them on a perfect fall day and it was so much fun to watch aria play with the pumpkins. she’s becoming quite mobile and it was so cute seeing her explore and test her balance as we wandered around the farm. at the end of the session, aria got to share some exciting news :)

in the last three years, my friend tara has either been a guest at, done hair for, or even sat in with the band during most of the local weddings I have photographed. I have so much fun with her and am always happy to see her and her husband willie. so when willie’s mom, sharon, contacted me about for a session with the whole family I was looking so forward to meeting everyone. we met up at byrd park during a beautiful fall evening – the leaves were still hanging in there and the colors on the pocomoke river were lovely. this was also the first time I got to meet kai, tara and willie’s newborn son. their older son, fisher, was so cute as he loved up on the baby and is clearly enjoying his new role as big brother. I really enjoyed meeting all of you and look forward to the next session!

I first met katie at a starbucks.. we actually were sitting at tables right next to each other and didn’t realize it until her wedding planner, and my friend, heather arrived. as soon as the conversation began about her and andre’s wedding, I knew that I really, really… really! wanted to work with them. she was just so cool and down to earth and I knew that spending their wedding day with the two of them would be such a good experience. happily, heather contacted me a few days later and our working relationship began. I was anticipating that our first shoot would be their esession, but because they had been out of town for last year’s santa paws, they really wanted some photos of their puppy argo… if you know me at all, you know that I was more than happy to accommodate this session :) it was during our walks through the park that day that I really started to get to know them both and soon we were just hanging out and talking. then this summer we all got together again for their esession in OC – even with crazy crowds and steamy temperatures, they were so relaxed and fun to photograph. as their wedding day grew closer, katie and I were emailing or texting almost everyday.. you could feel her excitement and as kris and I drove to DC, I couldn’t wait to see them both. the beauty of building relationships with our couples before wedding day is that you find out some things, you get to know their history, some of their private jokes, and what they have gone through together. in the brief time that I have known them, I know that they have supported each other through some tremendous events. I also know that this only strengthened their love and commitment to each other. and as I walked through the door of the bridal suite, I could see all of this glowing from katie… it filled the room. as the final touches were applied and katie and andre exchanged gifts in their appointed suites, we all headed to the carnegie for their first look. the weather was perfect.. perfect! and after they saw each other, well.. it was magic. I could go on about the ceremony – that was so lovely. or the reception – which was put together so beautifully by heather and jessica of HJ planners… but what I took away from this day were the moments.. the moment when they first saw each other. the moment that her mother made one of the most touching toasts I have even heard. the moment when her grandfather simply couldn’t help himself and cut in to dance with katie during her and andre’s first dance. these are what a wedding day are all about – the little moments that I am so grateful to be able to capture for couples like katie and andre. I am SO happy for you two (and argo!) and am so lucky to call you friends. you are am amazing couple and I wish you a lifetime of happiness! xoxo
