1 I first met with kristen at her workplace which is not your average 9 to 5 – she works for senator barbara milkulski and the day we planned to meet at her office was the first day that everyone was back in session after a break. as I showed her albums and she told me about her and ryan’s wedding day plans, other staffers were literally running down hallways. ‘it’s always like this when they get back.’ kristen explained to me, unfazed. as we talked over coffee, I learned more about their zoo wedding – in her initial email, when she had mentioned the zoo, I had responded with enthusiasm.. a lot of enthusiasm! I simply love it when our couples choose venues that may not be conventional (which is awesome!), but locations that are meaningful to them. so as their wedding day grew closer, I was looking so forward to capturing every moment of kristen and ryan’s big day. I met up with the lovely bride and her girls at her parent’s house as jillian headed to the peabody court hotel to be with ryan and his guys. the house was abuzz with excitement as the finishing touches were being applied. after I greeted their pets, both of whom were trying to figure out exactly what all of the fuss was about, I noticed the bouquets. I have photographed weddings before where a bride constructs a bouquet out of brooches that are special to her – but never have I seen works of art like these keepsakes that kristen made for her bridesmaids. each of their bouquets were of a certain color scheme and held pins and brooches that kristen had individually selected specifically for each friend.. they were stunning! once everyone was ready, we headed to the church. for late summer, the day was mild and beautiful as kristen and ryan shared heartfelt vows and sealed it with a kiss in front of all of their family and friends. once we got to the zoo, a guide took ryan, kristen and me to some of the more popular spots around the zoo – each location was so cool and gave me a lot to play with! after photographing on the zoo grounds, we headed into the mansion house where the reception was being held and it’s there where I met tails.. possibly the cutest penguin on the planet. tails obviously lives at the zoo and is so friendly that when people have events at there, he and his trainer like to make an appearance to say hello. there are quite a few photographs of kristen and ryan with tails in this post.. but c’mon… I had a penguin to work with!! the whole day was so memorable and was such a perfect way to wrap up the summer season. kristen and ryan, thank you so much for including me and jillian in such an important and special day. we wish you so much love and laughter in your life together. cheers!

conner lives here in snow hill and is the son of my friends, susan and gary. he is also the brother of one of my former senior portrait clients, grant. when we were talking about his session, susan told me that he was very into frisbee golf.. and that he played the drums. but when asked what he wanted his senior portraits to be, conner just wanted to stay here in town and keep it simple. we started at their house like we did with grant – the family has such a lovely back yard and it was nice to visit with their pups again. then we headed to green street – I’ve walked down that road a million times and somehow it always looks just a little different which is pretty cool when choosing spots to photograph. we wound up the session at byrd park – the river and surrounding banks were beautiful on this ideal fall afternoon. conner you were so great to work with and I hope that you have such an exciting and fun-filled senior year!

I met brooke and her mom at the beach during a beautiful evening on assateague island – seriously, it couldn’t have been more perfect. the crowds were gone, the light was soft and golden and a light breeze swept across the sand. brooke goes to stephen decatur high school and is in her senior year. I always enjoy photographing senior portrait sessions because I have an opportunity to get to know these young clients and hear all about their big dreams for the future – it’s such an exciting time. I had so much fun with you brooke and I hope that you have an amazing final year in this chapter – I wish you wonderful adventures!

1 I first met michelle when I was attending an event in berlin – she was with my longtime client and friend erika and as soon as we started talking about michelle’s upcoming wedding to mike I was hoping I would hear from them because her happiness was contagious! happily, several weeks later I did and we began making plans for their wedding photography including the engagement session. because they live nearby, we decided that working in byrd park here in snow hill would be an ideal spot. we met at the studio where I had the pleasure of meeting mike for the first time and he was as warm and nice as michelle. we headed to the park and as we were stopping at different spots I learned of their longtime friendship which had blossomed into a love story. I smiled as they exchanged grins and wrapped their arms around each other as they shared their journey to this exciting new chapter of their lives together and I am looking so forward to documenting all of their happiness along the way.

Ever since I met Bonnie + Derek during their engagement session this past June, I couldn’t wait for their wedding. Bonnie + Derek are one of those couples that you can just click with, and from the moment I arrived at the historic Woodlawn Manor, I was welcomed by their family and knew that it was going to be an amazing day.

As the finishing touches for the day were going on, Bonnie and I headed over to Sandy Spring Friends School to meet Derek for their first look. Derek proposed there, so it was the perfect spot to have his first glance of his beautiful bride. One of my favorite things about this couple is their playful and loving nature. When they are around each other, their happiness just radiates!

Back at Woodlawn Manor, it was time for the ceremony to begin and Bonnie’s father played the bagpipes as he led the processional – including Best Dog, Grover! During the Quaker ceremony, a Meeting for Worship was held where guests were invited to voice heartfelt support for the couple, which was so moving. Bonnie and Derek exchanged their funny and sweet vows they wrote for one another – and they capped the whole ceremony off with an at-alter selfie!

After the ceremony, the party really started. Bonnie + Derek thought of every detail including a photo booth and a dual flavor slushie machine! Everywhere I turned, their guests were smiling and laughing. All of their family and guests were so warm and welcoming, it felt like being among friends all night. The second Bonnie + Derek kicked off the dance floor, it stayed packed for the whole night – especially as our groom led the Wobble! The only time there was a break in the dancing was for the guests to indulge in the amazing cake made by a friend of the couple.

Bonnie and Derek, I am so thrilled for you two and am so happy to have been able to capture the day as the Goats Got Married!! Congratulations!

Thank you to all of these amazing vendors that made Bonnie + Derek’s wedding a smash!

jennifer is the ‘J’ of HJ planners, one of our favorite wedding and event planning groups based out of DC. my friend heather (yep, she’s the ‘H’) contacted me when jennifer was still pregnant but close to her due date to ask if I would be available to come up to their neck of the woods once the baby was born. several days later jennifer and I confirmed the session and it wasn’t long before she and her husband scott welcomed their daughter sarah. due to extensive renovations at their house, I met up with all of them at the clubhouse of their community in alexandria which was really lovely and had gorgeous light. sarah cooed, slept a little bit and never took her eyes off of her parents who are both so over-the-moon in love with their little girl. I had such a wonderful morning with all of you and look forward to seeing you and the beautiful sarah again soon

Jillian + Jeff ‘s story is something you might find if you picked up a fantasy book off of the shelf of your local library.  They grew up together in the same neighborhood and were high school sweethearts.  It was then that they knew they wanted to be together for a long time and had the complete support of their family and friends.  Through college, jobs, traveling and house buying, Jillian and Jeff have been each other’s best friend and they recently added Hurley, their lovable golden doodle, to the family.  When discussing where they would be married, no other place seemed better than where it all started.  They decided to tie the knot on the banks of the Wicomico River in the same neighborhood where they lived and met.

On wedding day, I drove up to the house to meet with Jillian and the girls.  I had met her sisters a week before when I shot baby Emily’s session and was so excited to see everyone again.  Cheryl Haight was finishing up Jillian’s hair and the girls were applying finishing touches.  Payton, Jillian’s niece, helped with the festivities. :)  Jillian wore her mother’s gorgeous cathedral veil for her “something borrowed” and had a beautiful ring that was also from Mom as her “something blue”.  I ventured over to Jeff’s house up the street and Amber Hughes was primping everyone in the Dolan house.  Jeff and his brother Tom were getting ready and we made our way outside to have some fun with Hurley.  Both houses were bustling with excitement for Jillian and Jeff’s big day.

I loved that they decided to do a private “first look” down by the water before the ceremony.  It was beautiful to see these two just soak in the past that they have built, the present moment and future that will come.  Hurley came down for some shots and then they all tucked away for the ceremony.  Jim Grey from The City Florist had a big part in Jillian + Jeff’s wedding.  He and her sister Mallory not only created all of the floral arrangements and decorations, but Jim also ministered their wedding.  Guests entered the ceremony space to the beautiful guitar sounds played by Jillian’s brother, Joe.  Jillian and Jeff stood under the tall pines and on their strong roots over looking the river as they exchanged their vows.  The sun peered through as close family and friends witnessed this very special moment.  One of Jeff’s nicknames is “tree” and I thought it was very fitting that he had a wooden wedding ring. :)  After they said “I Do!” it was time to celebrate!

The acoustic sounds of Neer Hershtig, a close friend of the bride and groom, echoed over the lawn and everyone met and mingled.  Creative Catering was prepping the delicious food while guests played corn hole and indulged in libations.  Cake Art provided the lovely wedding cake that even had a “bark” layer!  Harry Suber kept the dance floor moving and throughout the whole night I would catch Jeff and Jillian looking at each other from across the room and they just smiled and laughed.  It was very apparent that their wedding was a beautiful weaving of their close friends and family and I am so grateful I was able to be apart of this big day.  Jillian + Jeff- I am really happy for you both and truly admire the love and friendship you both share.

I first met kelly when she needed some photos taken for a modeling portfolio and I had so much fun working with her. this is a girl who loves fashion and getting in front of a camera which makes her a dream to photograph – so I was really excited when her mother, sandy, contacted me to do her senior portraits. we met up along the pocomoke river at byrd park on a gorgeous afternoon. as usual, kelly was enthusiastic, armed with some very cool outfits and ready to go! we had such a great time and caught up on what had been happening with her since our last session. midway through the shoot, her family jumped in for a few photos which I loved. I hope that you have the time of your life during your senior year and I look forward to working with you again soon! 4 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13

You may remember this amazing couple from our blog two months ago.  I photographed Katie + Drew’s maternity session in July and we were all awaiting the arrival of this precious boy. :) Lucas Richard was born on August 22, 2014  at 9:24 am.  He weighed in at 8 pounds 15 ounces and was 22 inches long.  Lucas’ middle name is Katie’s father’s name and he was an avid waterman in the Bivalve area for many years and a very important man in Katie’s life.  I kept seeing Katie’s photos of Lucas and couldn’t wait to meet him!  When I arrived Lucas was sound asleep. :)  Katie showed me some of her father’s tools of the trade and we were even able to use his old jacket in some of the photos.  Drew loves to ride dirt bikes and told Katie as soon as Lucas can walk they are going to get him involved with it. ;) It was so much fun working with you all again, I’m so happy you have this new joy in your life.  He was amazing and I can’t wait to watch him grow up!
