ever since I first worked with kate and mark during their e-session, I have always welcomed any opportunity to get together with them. they are so much fun and as a couple they are awesome! playful, hysterical and crazy about each other :) on their wedding day, they braved unseasonably chilly weather (it was freezing!) to get the beach photos they wanted with enthusiasm and humor. so when I found out that they were expecting, I knew that I had some wonderful sessions in my future. for her maternity session, kate wanted to go to the beach and we lucked out with a gorgeous winter afternoon.. like wacky nice! shortly before I left for paris, I was so happy to hear that their son trey had arrived and we scheduled a session soon after I got back home. now if you know me at all, you know that I will include a dog in any session possible, especially if said dog is one of my favorites like brant – a big, beautiful and bear-huggable chocolate lab. although he’s not too sure what to make of the little guy just yet (he basically just ignores his existence for now) I am sure that they are going to be the best of friends as trey gets older. I am so SO happy for all of you and can’t wait until I see you all again! xoxo

I’ll admit it, ever since photographing travis and andrea’s hudson valley wedding, I’ve kind of been waiting for them to start a family so that we could work together again. they were one of those couples who we just clicked with instantly – as though we’d been friends forever, and I was so happy when I heard that they were expecting. as she has a tendency to do this time of year, mother nature didn’t really play along with our session plans. deep freezes, torrential rain and snow flurries required us to move their session around a few times, but we finally lucked out with the perfect day. their excitement and anticipation were apparent as we talked about the quickly approaching due date, the nursery and everything that comes with being first time parents. andrea was stunning, as usual, but also had this subtle peace and serenity about her that was so beautiful. I am looking so forward to meeting your little guy.. soon! and can’t wait to work with you all again. xoxo

I had the honor and pleasure of photographing allison and bryan’s gorgeous beach wedding in the fall of 2011 and since then we have stayed in touch. like many of our couples, they share big moments and milestones on facebook – the morning I logged in to see that they were expecting, I was so excited and happy for them and soon thereafter, we scheduled their maternity session. they knew that they were having a girl and tossed around some names that they were thinking of as we walked the streets of berlin, but only a few shorts weeks later I learned of their final choice as they happily announced that their daughter claire had arrived. we had such a wonderful afternoon – claire was SO good (and very cute!) and allison was radiant :) I couldn’t be happier for you all as you begin this new chapter of your family.

this is our final ‘best of’ post and we couldn’t think of a better way to wrap this series up than posting it on valentine’s day. since the beginning of gillette portrait arts, we have been blessed to work with couples who have inspired us and this year was no different. the couples of 2013 were romantic, emotional, creative, hysterical, fashionable and most importantly, crazy in love. we thank you so much for inviting us to capture such a special time in your lives. you made us laugh, you made us cry (in the best way!) and you showed us time and time again what true love looks like. it has been an honor and such a pleasure to work with all of you and we wish you SO much love, laughter and joy in your lives together! xoxo

when my mother decided to move from upstate new york back to her home on the eastern shore, her first order of business was to invite all of our friends down. the kickoff shindig she threw was for my friends, who were all basically her ‘kids’ and she couldn’t wait to welcome them to her new home. in customary cornelia fashion, she had their cocktail of choice ready for everyone as they arrived throughout the day, including for my best friend heidi and her then-boyfriend randy. he poured himself a frothy ale while heidi asked for water – to explain why this was odd is to give you a long history of the parties that my mother and I hosted, which I won’t bother you with now – but let’s just say that a water request was unusual. as I looked at heidi, her eyes welled up as her hand went to her stomach and she said ‘I wanted to tell you in person.’ immediately knowing what this meant, I raced across the room and couldn’t let her go as I kept saying ‘oh my god’ and she would say ‘I know’.. ‘oh my god!’ ‘I know!’ ‘OH MY GOD!!’ ‘I KNOW!!’ as the tears flowed. heidi was my first friend to have a child so as her best friend, this was unfamiliar territory. hers was the first maternity session I ever photographed, the first time I ever listened with interest to birthing plans, the first baby gifts I ever sought out, and the first time I knew, really knew, that we were growing up. I was at work in baltimore when I got the call from randy that heidi had gone into labor and got to new york shortly after their daughter, whom they had named skylar, was born. I had no experience with babies.. zero, zilch, none. I was terrified that I would break her but I held her regardless and fear fell away as I was overwhelmed with a whole new love for this little, amazing, breathtaking person. as she grew up, I was ‘aunt’ raye and my role in sky’s life was that of her mother’s best friend – I was loved, for sure.. but still an adult, which meant that at times (ie: the early teenage years) I was, by default, not to be trusted with more than fun facts. then several years ago, something amazing happened.. she started talking, really talking to me. we talked about family and creative passions (she’s a crazy talented musician!). we talked about our fears and our dreams. we talked about accomplishments that we were proud of and things we wish we had never, ever done. we talked about boys, obviously…. and soon, when I would have a phone call with heidi, half of it was spent talking to sky and when we would all visit each other, sky and I would carve out a little time just for us. I know this.. if I ever did have a child of my own, I would want them to have a kind heart, a smart and wicked sense of humor, compassion, a quiet strength, sensitivity, a love for life and adventure, curiosity and a gentle nature. fortunately.. I already have all of that and so much more in my girl, my heart.

everyone loves a good party and this year our couples threw some epic celebrations! from grand events held in ballrooms with 300 guests to intimate affairs at home with cherished close friends and family, we had the opportunity to photograph so much fun and love. there were lovely and funny toasts, special moments between old friends, endearing traditions, big bands, beat boxing + bluegrass trios and some of the best food we’ve ever tasted. 2013, you threw one hell of a shindig!

considering that our 2014 seasons kicks off in just a few weeks, we wanted to wrap up our best of 2013 posts. in addition to the photos we take of them together (coming in our final ‘best of’ post of friday) we always like to get images of our brides and grooms individually. usually we photograph these before the ceremony or during the first look. these times are always full of anticipation and excitement and the perfect time to capture some emotional moments. and… if we do say so ourselves, we have some of the most handsome grooms and beautiful brides on the planet!
