so a few weeks ago the local weather forecasters, as they have a tendency to do in these parts, were predicting a ‘concerning amount of snow’ and threw everyone into a milk and bread buying panic. on the shore this means an inch – but I’ll take it! considering I grew up in syracuse, I yearn for a good snowfall like some pine for the beach. I knew that I wanted to do a snow session of some sort, so I contacted lexie’s mom kristin. if you follow the blog, lexie is a familiar face – ever since the first time I worked with her and her sister payton I have looked forward to every opportunity I’ve had to photograph them – again and again… they are amazing! so we were all set to go but the next morning there was nothing.. maybe a small dusting, but nothing that would provide more than an hour school delay. a week later however, I woke up to see my backyard blanketed with several inches and shortly thereafter I got a text from kristin.. ‘shoot today?!’ absolutely YES! I had actually found a $10 dress at H+M in the late summer that I bought because I knew I could use it at some point so I pulled it out of the closet. I took a photo and sent it to lexie letting her know ahead of time exactly how I was planning on torturing her. in addition to the snow, it was cold – usually when we get that kind of accumulation, the temps go up to 50 and it melts right away. but not this day – I totally would have understood if lex said no, but of course she didn’t.. she’s that great.

thank you lexie for once again exceeding my expectations! you are a rockstar and a joy – I absolutely LOVE working with you and can’t wait until our next shoot! xoxo

I have known Monica + Tim for quite some time but had never met their baby Maya- until last week! :)  Monica told me that Maya was turning one and I couldn’t believe that I had yet to meet her.  I was so excited to hang out with everyone, including Tim’s parents who stayed for a few shots.  Maya has gorgeous blue eyes and is almost walking.  She kept trying to play with my camera and was just a joy to shoot.  Tim brought out a Mini Cooper play car and by the end of the day I still wasn’t sure if it was more of a toy for Maya or him. ;)  We played outside for a bit and then headed back in for a nap.  I am so happy I was finally able to meet this beautiful little girl!  Can’t wait till next time! xoxo Kristie

I photographed jessica and russell’s wedding a little over 2 years ago and since then I have kept up with all of their exciting happenings since becoming man and wife. the most thrilling of course was the arrival of their daughter harper! jessica contacted me several weeks ago and we set up a session at their new home – they totally gutted and renovated it and it’s gorgeous! harper’s playroom was the obvious place to start with it’s beautiful light. she is an absolute joy – always smiling, clapping and on the move :)

it was so great seeing you and I was so happy to meet harper! I’m looking forward to our next session :)

this is our final ‘best of’ post and we couldn’t think of a better way to wrap this series up. since the beginning of gillette portrait arts, we have been blessed to work with couples who have inspired us and this year was no different. the couples of 2012 were romantic, emotional, creative, hysterical, fashionable and most importantly crazy in love. we thank you so much for inviting us to capture such a special time in your lives. you made us laugh, you made us cry (in the best way!) and you showed us time and time again what true love looks like. it has been an honor and such a pleasure to work with all of you and we wish you SO much love, laughter and joy in your lives together! xoxo

in addition to the photos we take of them together (coming tomorrow in our final ‘best of’ post) we always like to get images of our brides and grooms individually. usually we photograph these is before the ceremony or during the first look. these times are always full of anticipation and excitement and the perfect time to capture some emotional moments. if we do say so ourselves, we have some of the most handsome grooms and beautiful brides ever!

everyone loves a good party and this year our couples threw some epic celebrations! from grand events held in ballrooms with 300 guests to intimate affairs at home with cherished close friends and family, we had the opportunity to photograph so much fun and love. there were touching and funny toasts, special moments between old friends, big bands + bluegrass trios and some of the best food we’ve ever tasted. 2012, you threw one hell of a shindig!

perhaps it’s the advent of etsy and pinterest (both of which we’re all way too addicted to!) or maybe we just have some mad crafty clients (we do!) but in the last several years we have noticed more and more personal touches at our weddings. we love how the details reflect all of their different interests and loves – putting who they are as a couple into all facets of this special day. liv was a classic example – not only did she have a hand in the design of her wedding dress, but she also collected over 100 broaches to create one of the coolest bouquets ever! we even had one bride who had so much fun when it came to her details, that she’s considering a career change into wedding decor and design. whether it’s homemade guest favors or a wedding cake made by your best friend, our couples went above and beyond and really wowed us this year

I had another “wedding first” when I met Laura + Todd for the first time. :) We got to know each other and talk before ever meeting face to face!  Heather at HJ Planners brought us together and we were able to video chat about their big day.  I’m so excited for their fall wedding at the Omni Shoreham- it’s such a gorgeous venue with elegant ballrooms and a beautiful garden.  I also was able to see the chemistry between Laura + Todd while we were talking and see how they made each other laugh.  Needless to say that after our conversation I couldn’t wait to meet them at their engagement session.  We got together last Saturday for a fun afternoon in Georgetown.  Laura + Todd have been together for almost 8 years when Todd surprised Laura with his proposal.  He successfully tricked her by giving her a bottle of perfume as a decoy and when she was busy reading a poem he wrote for her, he got down on one knee. :)  Throughout the esession Laura + Todd were constantly making each other laugh and giggle.  I love the chemistry between you both + I am so happy to be working with you two!

Can’t wait to see you on wedding day! :)

whether it was a big and boisterous gang of folks or just one best friend on each side, this year our couples had some of the coolest bridesmaids and groomsmen that we’ve ever worked with. they scaled towers and braced hurricane sandy’s incoming winds, they took care of the ‘dogs-of-honor’ and mixed the cocktails  - but most of all they provided our brides and grooms with friendship, laughter support and love.

Happy 2013 everyone!  For most, New Year’s Day is a new beginning for a fresh start.  A day to implement thought out resolutions, a jumpstart for personal enrichment and a day for bettering oneself.  For Maryann + Dan- January 1, 2013 was just that!  :)   I’ve mentioned before that I love photographing weddings not only from a creative standpoint but also because (if I’m lucky) I feel apart of the families I photograph.  The Holtzer family has welcomed me with open arms since I shot  Becky + Chris’ wedding 2 years ago.  Then, last October I was able to see everyone again at Dani + Chad’s wedding!  Dan gave me a big ol’ bear hug like no time had passed at all since Becky’s wedding.  Dani was the last of his 5 beautiful girls to get married so I figured the next time I’d see the Holtzer family would be when babies arrived.  But then I learned that Dan was tying the knot himself!  I met Maryann for the first time and fell in love with her and her joyous personality. She and Dan said they were getting married on New Year’s Day and I couldn’t wait.

I met up with them at their church in Ocean City and saw a lot of family + friends.  Becky + Chris couldn’t make it to the wedding but Dani was able to FaceTime them during the ceremony so that they could see the whole wedding- a first for me! After their lovely ceremony we all headed to an afternoon brunch and shared stories over mimosas.  Maryann showed me the coins she had in her shoes- the silver dime was one her mother wore for good luck and the wheat penny was given to her by her son.  I love this tradition, it is one of my absolute favorites!  Then it was time for everyone to head their separate ways.  Before I left, Maryann told me a little about what she and Karen, her maid of honor, did on her bachelorette night.  They went and wrote Dan + Maryann’s names in the cement under the Ocean City boardwalk.  The boardwalk is under construction after Hurricane Sandy so they were able to put their mark in their hometown.  This was such a cute idea and she sent me a picture they took the night they did it- I had to include it! :)

Thank you both so much for inviting me along to celebrate and ring in the new year with you all!  I can’t wait to see you guys again. :) Love, Kristie
