as most of you know, I don’t have kids (unless you consider the ‘furr-kids’ in which case I have the 2 coolest kids ever) people ask me why all the time – especially during family sessions because apparently I’m pretty good with kids and I guess there is no simple answer. maybe it’s because I met my husband when I was in my early 30′s and we got married when I was 35. maybe it’s because when I was little I played ‘office’ while my friends played ‘house’. whatever it was, motherhood was never really something I ever really thought about. fortunately my best friend heidi had the 2 most amazing kids on the planet and I have had the honor of being there when both sky and avery were born (or shortly thereafter) and to watch them grow into these incredible people. sky left for college last week – still a fact that I can’t quite wrap my head around. where’s the little girl who was in our wedding 7 years ago?? I remember when heidi called me to share that sky had a ‘serious’ boyfriend. at first I thought it was a typical early high school thing – where you like each other and you’re ‘going steady’ but this ryan kid wasn’t going anywhere. when he left for college, he came home every weekend to see sky – AND they were facebook official.. very important. in the years since I have met ryan and have seen firsthand how happy he makes sky – and a happy sky makes me happy. the whole crew came down to the beach for one last hurrah before school started and I told sky that I really wanted to do a session with them. she happily agreed and we had a wonderful evening on the beach. as I edited I could see glimpses of the little girl I’ve known for 18 years but I also saw the amazing woman she is becoming. I love you so much girl and am so proud of you. and don’t you worry, your mom and I will come and embarrass you at college soon!! xoxo

lindsey is the niece of my very good friends and I have known her for awhile, but when she contacted me about doing her maternity session I was so excited as we hadn’t had the opportunity to work with each other before. she and husband alex live in viginia but were down our way for a family visit so it was the perfect time to head to one of her favorite places – the beach! I absolutely loved this evening – the weather was absolutely perfect and lindsey and alex were amazing to work with. I simply can’t wait to meet baby brown!

congratulations and I’ll be seeing you soon for baby’s first photo shoot! xo

this wedding was full of firsts for me. it was my first completely bilingual wedding, it was my first bi-coastal wedding (ceremony on the western side of the chesapeake bay with reception on the east side), and it was my first time working at the chesapeake bay enviromental center – LOVE it! fortunately it wasn’t my first time meeting or working with the amazing laura and alber. I had met laura and her mom at the what’s up weddings show in january and knew that I wanted to work with her as soon as she stopped at our booth. laura was so nice, funny and excited to marry the love of her life – our kind of bride! several months later I had the pleasure of meeting alber when we photographed their e-session. these two are smitten… absolutely and completely smitten with each other and on their wedding day it was felt by all of us there. liv and I loved how different parts of their personalities and cultures were reflected in everything from crab cakes to pinatas and their signature beverage. so much thought was taken in making this amazing day that much more special!

liv and I had such a wonderful day with you – we wish you so much happiness and hope we have the chance to work together again!

I had the pleasure of working with kendall a few weeks ago. at a wedding in may, I saw kendall’s mom brent and she said how much she wanted some photos of kendall and her horse dede before her horse’s owner left town for several months. fortunately we had a beautiful sunday for the session :) dede is such a patient horse and obviously adores kendall! to be honest, I get a little nervous around horses so it was amazing to see kendall handle her with such confidence and grace. while we were all there, we thought it would be fun to get some photos of kendall with her other love, the violin. she was such a trooper as I had her play and then play again – asking her to spin till she was dizzy. this is one cool little girl!

thanks for such a wonderful morning – I had so much fun and it was great to see you both!

any time I see sarah’s name in my inbox, I know that it’s the beginning of something creative, fun and different! see the last time we worked with sarah it was for her latest album release and we shot around abandoned buildings and marshland. this time the imagery she needed for her latest work was to be a bit different and we all thought that some water and nighttime elements would be perfect. so off to the beach we went. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I loved this session. one – it’s totally up my alley getting to play with both natural and off camera lighting and second – sarah is easily one of the best models I’ve ever worked with. as waves crashed into her, she simply threw back her hair and resumed the pose. as onlookers gathered, she was focused on only me and kris. I am SO happy with the end result and can’t wait to work with her again! be sure to check her music out by clicking here.

I had the pleasure of working with katherine’s older sister anna a couple of years ago when she was a senior and the whole family was so great to work with! so I was thrilled when mom mary anna contacted me to say that katherine was entering her senior year. all of these sisters are such awesome girls – so friendly and lovely to be around. except…. well, okay. I am a little bit of an olympics freak and because I wouldn’t get anything done if I watched the live daytime stream, I was super careful not to view or listen to anything olympics related until after dinner when my husband and I would settle in to watch it in prime time. and I was successful until that fateful walk as katherine and I approached the dunes of assateague. being a gymnast herself, she was keeping close tabs on the competition and was bubbling with excitement when she casually announced that the american women’s team had won team gold. now to be honest, I didn’t care at all – but I have to admit that it was fun to tease her about it for the rest of the afternoon :) several days later katherine and mary anna came to snow hill and we finished up her session down at the fishing shantys on the bay. I had such a great time and was so happy to work with this amazing family again.

I hope you have a wonderful senior year and thank you for being my worcester prep senior rep!

so far the senior season has been so great and unlike any other we’ve ever had before – caitlin is our second senior who traveled to the beach on vacation and wanted to get her senior portraits at the beach. I think this is so cool because not only do I love working with seniors, but I know that these are sessions that they have thought about a lot beforehand (plus they might even get some bragging rights at home for having beach photos lol!) I met up with caitlin, her mom and her brother at the inlet in OC. caitlin had a great selection of outfits to play with plus a vintage bike which I adored! despite some windy conditions, I had such a great time with all of them as we worked on the boardwalk and down by the ocean

thank for spending the evening with me caitlin and I hope you have an amazing senior year!

This weekend I had one of my most memorable and exciting ‘firsts’.  When our former bride and friend Lauren asked me to come along and photograph her husband Drew’s homecoming, I felt honored and thankful that she wanted me there during such a special time.  Lauren and Drew were married in April of 2011 and Raye photographed them at their wedding.  Lauren even had a blue streak in her hair for something blue- how awesome is that?! :)  Five short months later, Drew was sent off with the Army overseas and would be there for eleven months.  With a strong military wife support group, an amazing family and her dog Gizmo by her side, Lauren waited patiently until Drew returned.  We found out the night before that Drew would be coming in the next day at 1:30.  So she asked one of her “wifeys” Nicki to come over and help her decorate the yard and help her get ready.  When I met up with her Saturday, Lauren was on cloud nine and I was so excited to see the look on their faces when the finally see each other. We weren’t the only ones anxiously awaiting Drew’s arrival. :) Nicki helped put red + blue streaks in Lauren’s hair.Once we saw that he arrived, we booked it to the baggage claim!Drew came home with other soldiers in his troop and their families were just as happy to see them. :) Lauren + Drew, I am so incredibly happy that you two are reunited and able to finally enjoy your new house and lives together.  I am so honored and grateful that I was able to be there for this joyous occasion.  Thank you Drew for all that you have done and continue to do for our country and thank you Lauren for being his hero.  xoxo Kristie

when I was a senior in high school, we simply had one class period where we would wander down to the auditorium and get 1 head and shoulders shot. looking back, even though I hate my photo taken, I would have loved if we did what seniors do now. my seniors put a lot of thought into where they want to shoot and their outfits, etc. but zoey went a step further – she’s from kansas but had always wanted her senior photos taken on the beach (obviously not possible in land-locked kansas) and when her mom contacted me a couple months about this, I thought it was the coolest thing ever! and since then I have had the pleasure of working with several other seniors who specifically got their photos done while at the beach on vacation (you’ll meet them soon!) zoey came to the session with her mom and grandmother – such a fun bunch. she brought an awesome selection of outfits with a betsy johnson dress that I just adored!

it was so great to meet you all – thanks for a wonderful afternoon!
