friday flashbacks took a bit of a vacation…. and by vacation I mean almost 2 months! after our busiest wedding season ever we switched right over to holiday season and it’s been a whirlwind here at the studio. but now that cards have been designed and prints ordered, we’re getting back to a bit of a normal rhythm and back to our friday feature. I thought it would be great to jump start it with jen and brad – not only because they are one of our favorite couples but also because they are expecting their first child in just a few weeks! I had the privilege in going up to baltimore to do a maternity session with them earlier this week and we can not wait to meet baby brandon!

  • where and when did you get married? febuary 11,2011 St. Wenceslaus Church
  • was there a special reason for choosing your venue? Brad: I did not have one, whatever jen wanted  Jen: the reason for getting married in the church we chose was because it’s where my mom’s parents got married (my grandmother still attends mass there regularly to this day!), my mom and dad got married there, and my brother and sister-on-law got married there. I was also baptized there and I wanted to keep with “tradition” so to speak. It’s an old catholic church that’s located in not the best part of baltimore city, but it’s beautiful and it holds a lot of memories for me. The reason for choosing Martin’s West for our reception was simply because it was in our budget! :)
  • what was your most memorable moment(s)?  Brad: repeating my vows to jen, it was nice that we were dedicating ourselves to each other  Jen: when the church doors opened and seeing everyone there to celebrate with Brad and I, then just zoning in on my soon-to-be husband! He’s all I saw for the rest of the wedding ceremony! :) Seeing Brad’s face light up when we were dancing to our first dance as husband and wife. He didn’t know that I chose his song and mine as our first dance songs! And seeing Brad’s face when he got tacos (his favorite dish) as part of his dinner at the reception! He couldn’t believe I actually ordered him tacos :) And lastly, just enjoying the few moments that we had alone together that evening. It just seemed so surreal that it was OUR wedding day!!
  • if you had it to do over again whould you change anything and what/why? Brad: I would have made the reception last longer. Other than that it was great Jen: I would do it all over again in a heart beat!!! I loved our wedding day, everything about it!! I literally had a meltdown about it being over once we got back to our hotel room that evening. I was so sad that it went by so fast! One this I would change if I could do it all over again is I would remember to get a few of the “must-have” pics that I forgot to get.
  • where did you honeymoon? Ocho Rios Jamaica, Mon

I am so SO happy for you both and so honored to be included to document your big beautful life together!! xo

when I met denise at the womans healthy heart awareness luncheon at PRMC last month she had mentioned to me that she may want me to come photograph her family – so when she called a week later to set it up I was really looking forward to it. once I arrived to their beautiful home, the whole family was outside enjoying the perfect fall weather. I was instantly greeted by denise’s granddaughter sarah who was already smiling and laughing. now this little girl is not only adorable but has SO much energy – if you could bottle it, I would be first in line to buy up cases! first she rode her zip line and then it was 4 wheelers and scooters – all of which she was more skilled at doing than I ever would be. just speding time with these folks was really fun, but being able to document a beautiful family on just an ordinary day was the best

thanks to everyone for a wonderful afternoon and I hope to see you again soon!

a lot of times, when photographing teenagers, you never know what you’re going to get. I’ve been so fortunate to have young clients who have not only taken my direction, but often times added their own twist – this is SO important to me. my philosophy is that it’s my job to capture who they are and encourage them to be their unique and awesome selves. I pretty much got a vibe as to how awesome payton and lexie are about 45 seconds after meeting them! as I hopped into their truck and we headed to the national seashore, they were beyond excited and I knew that we would have the best time. these girls are so comfortable in front of the camera – in fact, payton has some shooting skills of her own and when I handed her my camera so that she could try it out, she looked at me as though I had handed her a bucket of gold :)  as the sun started to go, they didn’t want to wrap up the session – loved it!

thank you ladies for such an amazing afternoon – can’t wait to work with you again!!

kristel and eric were married on an absolutely stunning fall day – as I made the drive to baltimore I couldn’t help but be excited. it’s rare that I meet my couples the day of the wedding but this was the case with kristel and eric and once I got to the house to meet up with kristel, I knew that this was going to be an amazing day. she and her bridesmaids and mom were so nice and immediately made me feel at home. once she got dressed – with the addition of some killer heels! – we were off to the church for the ceremony. there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the sun was glowing as they saw  each other for the first time. this is a group that loves to have fun and I had to laugh when I entered the room where eric was getting ready to find him, his brother and dad prepping a bit of humor for the ceremony on the bottom of his shoes. after the ceremony, it was only a 5 minute drive to merryvale castle for the reception. after some hysterical and also touching toasts it was time to party! everyone filled the dance floor all night and as I said good bye to them, krystal and eric were on top of the world

congratulations! you both were so much fun to work with and I wish you so much love and happiness!

ever since we first met and photographed their e-session, I had practically counted the days for caitlin and brian’s wedding. they are just one of those couples whose demeanor is so inviting and their happiness is infectious. the two of them actually met miles and miles away from here – while both in graduate school in michigan, they had a class together and learned they were both from maryland. caitlin remembers that she was too nervous to talk to him at first, but eventually she did and the rest… well it wound up with a wedding happening in the quaint town of saint michaels. caitlin and brian chose the oaks for their celebration and it was such a beautiful day at this gorgeous location – leaves were bursting with color and excitement was in the air. their ceremony was filled with happy tears and laughter, the reception was festive with some of the best food I’ve ever had AND the night was capped of with a fireworks surprise from catilin’s parents. and when I say fireworks, this was not just a few roadside poppers – it was a full out, sky filling show worthy of any fourth of july celebration. as each flare powered it’s way into the sky, brian and caitlin hugged a little tighter and smiled a little bigger – a truly perfect ending to such a wonderful day

congratulations caitlin and brian – I had such an incredible day with you and know your life together with be magical!

I am getting more and more emails from aspiring photographers about SO many things – where did I learn photography, what was my path in my career, what kind of equiptment do I use, etc. we’ve been getting so many that we are kicking the idea around of holding a small workshop this spring. but on the job, whether it’s a fellow shooter or a guest at a wedding, the first question is always “where did you get that bag?!” I first met kelly at the love affair workshop 2 and a half years ago and it was career changing in so many ways – she and the other instructors millie, davina and lauren provided the ultimate resources for building my business because between the 4 of them, there wasn’t a question they couldn’t answer. there were only 40 of us in attendance so we were broken into 4 groups, each group being given a mentor for the duration of the workshop and kelly was mine. usually after dinner with the rest of the attendees, we would all gather together and break off into our groups. one night kelly was talking about creating a camera bag that wasn’t the same old thing we had endured forever and when we heard of her ideas, we were all excited to see her dream become a reality. fast forward a few years and as you can see, the girls at gillette portrait arts have fallen head over heels in love with kelly moore bags. when I first started out, camera bags were big bulky black monstrosities that were really difficult to shoot with. not only are these bags gorgeous, but they also make such sense for today’s photographer. my personal favorite, the orange libby up there, was hit by some small waves, banged when I stumbled over a loose dock plank and it has practically lived in the sandy dunes of assateague this year yet all of my gear has remained untouched. I really can’t say enough about them and since getting our first two at WPPI 2010, kristie and I huge fans! the fact that we have pulled mel and liv into our little addiction?? well, I guess that’s just a hazard of the job :)

I love love LOVE is when our couples sign up for day-after sessions. one, it extends the joy of the wedding day, if only for an hour or two. and second there are no time constraints, no reception to get to – we can really have fun and get creative. technically this wasn’t the exact day after danielle and josh’s wedding. sadly, they suffered the loss of danielle’s grandfather shortly before wedding day so there were family commitments that had to be tended to. we rescheduled for a few weeks later and they chose pintail point – love this place! josh likes to shoot sporting clays so they had been there numerous times but this was my first time and it’s such a gorgeous location AND we got the most stunning sunset I’ve seen all fall!

kris calls this last one a gone with the wind photo :) once again, I had so much fun working with you – you two are just inspiring to be around and I’ve loved getting to know you both!
