you ever had one of those days when you just ask yourself “how did I get so lucky?” I’ve had more than my fair share - but when you have a full week of gratitude, joy, friendship, laughter and love – well now that’s something. if you are a regular reader of the blog then you know that I was raised in upstate new york, right outside of syracuse. so a few months ago when kristie and I were hired to shoot a wedding in the hudson valley I was excited to at least travel to new york – even if it wasn’t as far “up” in upstate as my hometown. when we figured out that the annual photoplus expo was in nyc the following weekend… well let’s just say a plan was born. getting out of town for a week is unheard of during wedding season, even if it’s work related but in just 6 days we packed in a ton of some of the best memories ever :) we began with the wedding of one of the coolest couples ever – andrea and travis who treated us like family and showed us some amazing hospitality. then we were off to visit my best friend heidi and her kids sky and avery. kristie couldn’t stop shooting as I navigated the constant turns and hills (my jeep sadie was in her element!) on the way to heidi’s, we made a detour to woodstock, the town. I am on a secret mission to make a tree hugger out of kris yet and this ultimate hippie town in the mountains was  the perfect stop. once at heidi’s, after an impromptu leaf war between me and heid – who cares if we’re in our forties?? and a tie dye project with sky and her friends, we all talked late into the night around her kitchen table. then is was off to fayetteville – my little town. on a whim, we stopped at the house of my surrogate parents (or as they like to say my jewish parents) dick and patti silverman. they lived right down the street from us when I was little and their daughter leslie and I have been best friends since we were 4 years old. amazingly we found them both at home and joined patti for lunch. that night we went to visit and stay with my friend stefan who is the closest thing I have to a brother and his wife liz. it had been years since I saw them and it was so great catching up – the photo posted above is of the view from their house… not too shabby is it? for the tail end of our journey we headed to the big city and it’s an experience neither of us will ever forget – occupy wall street, the 9/11 memorial, dinner with one of my mom’s best friends – every second was wonderful. I don’t say this too casually when I say it was one of my favorite trips ever. not only do kristie and I work together – we are close friends who genuinely can spend a LOT of time together without driving each other crazy and we always have so much fun. as an only child, this is not something that comes naturally to me – with the exception of my husband, there are very few folks I can be around 24/7 without going crazy but since our first trip to vegas a few years ago we figured out that we travel really well together and I am so grateful to not only have her at gpa but in my life.  knowing that mel and liv were back at the studio gave us the peace of mind to truly relax and enjoy ourselves – thank god mel didn’t have the baby while we were gone! we came back energized and excited to finish up the rest of the season – to have the friends, staff, “parents”, experiences and job that I do left me feeling not only outrageously lucky, but so so blessed.

I have had the honor of working with this family many times… from erika and josh’s wedding to their family sessions once daughter hayden arrived both last year and the year before. I love watching my couples as they start a family and then getting to document the growth of the kids. hayden has always been a joy to photograph, but during this session her true personality was apparent from the second we met up in decatur park. this little girl loves to smile and erika and josh were kind enough to share some key words “dora!” and “lion king” that made that smile grow even wider :)

thank you all so much for yet another fabulous session – I can’t wait until next year!

“Want to try my spicy sausage dip?”  That’s all it took for these high school sweethearts to fall in love and develop a beautiful relationship.  When Stef and Kevin were planning their wedding they chose Circle D Farm as the location – a gorgeous farm located in Woodbine, Maryland.  They could not have asked for a more perfect, fall day.  The leaves were beining to change and there wasn’t a cloud in sight.  :) Stef and Kevin, being true Marylanders, had the Natty Boh guy and the Utz girl as their cake topper.  This is just one of the many details they thoughtfully included in their day.  I knew from their engagement session that Stef and Kevin’s friendship, love and laughter would be ever present on their wedding day – and with their friends and family they celebrated their joy.

Congratulations Stef and Kev!  I’m so happy you two have each other and that I could be there with you on this amazing day.  :)

I absolutely adore couples like danielle and josh – not only because they’re super cute and crazy in love but because their wedding was one of the most thoughtful and personal events I’ve ever had the pleasure to be a part of.  since our first communication, I knew that danielle was very detail oriented (a gal after my own heart) and that she had a specific vision for her and josh’s big day. with a guest list of only 35 with the wedding and reception being held at the inn at 202 dover I knew that this intimate affair would be, in a word, lovely. her planner for the day was the very talented phebe from making ME event planning and the always fabulous dana from petals outdid herself! this wedding was overflowing with so much love from friends and family – spontaneous toasts, frequent bear hug and happy tears were fully on display. and like they were during our e-session, danielle and josh just radiated the love that this wonderful occasion celebrated well into the night….

congratulations!! thank you so much for having me as a part of such a magical evening – I wish you much love and happiness!!

jessica was one of those brides I couldn’t wait to meet - before we sat down together at the studio I had a pretty good idea what her wedding to alex was going to be like and her excitement was infectious. leading up to their e-session, I would see frequent updates about some of their decisions for the big day on facebook from pens for the guest book to the song choice for the father-daughter dance. and all of their work paid off because it was gorgeous! the day at harbortowne was a crystal clear fall day.. just what jessica had been hoping for :) and everything was perfect. watching alex’s face through the lens as jessica walked across the lawn with her dad I knew it wouldn’t matter to him if it was snowing – all her wanted was for her to hurry up and get down the aisle to him

I am just so happy for you both! and I am so excited that you’re bringing your 4-legged “kids” to the beach for a mini-session in a couple of weeks - we hope to photograph you and your family as it grows for a long long time xoxo

Jenna and Josh are such an amazing couple – on an individual level and as a whole.  After meeting up with them for their engagement session, I felt like I had known them forever.  They are so comfortable together and completely in love.  I had anticipated their wedding for a long time and it was everything I thought it would be and more! :)  Jenna designed and created most of the details herself and they had a gorgeous day for a wedding!  They were married at the River House Inn overlooking the Pocomoke River and had a variety of Smith Island Cakes in multiple flavors.  Jenna and Josh had a wonderful wedding surrounded by their loving family and many friends.

Thank you so much for letting me spend this amazing day with you two.  I am so happy for both of you! :)

to say that cari and doug had a lot on their plate is an understatement – one, doug has recently gotten a new job so they had spent the week before their wedding moving from ohio to maryland. second, the weather forecast was anything but ideal for the beach wedding they had planned but third and most importantly, today was the day they were becoming husband and wife, and that was the only thing that really mattered. not sure if y’all know this, but wedding photographers are part meteorologist. I can only speak for myself, but I obsessively watch the weather channel days before a wedding and have the local radar on my iphone at all times when the forecast is iffy. and it was not looking good – thankfully, cari and doug wanted to do a first look so we took our chances and headed outside once cari had put her dress on… and that dress! the palest of pinks and absolutely stunning! mother nature granted me and kristie about an hour, during which time we were able to get all of the photos of cari and doug plus their bridal party. the skies opened right after we were done and their ceremony had to be moved inside – but at the golden sands, the walls of windows and sky lights in their top floor ballroom was the next best thing. and as soon as cari and her dad started down the aisle, no one was looking outside… she and doug only had eyes for each other

congratulations cari and doug – we wish you so much happiness as your travel through your new adventures together!

meet miss lillian! I had the pleasure of shooting her newborn session a little over a year ago – it always astounds me just how fast babies grow. to go from cuddled up in her mother’s arms in her new nursery to running on the beaches of chincoteague in such a seemingly short period of time is so amazing. lillian’s parents, emily and rory traveled down to chincoteague specifically for this session from their home outside of DC and it was so great to see them! as we got out of our cars I asked if lillian liked the ocean – it sometimes scares little ones who aren’t around it all of the time and the waves were big and crashing that day. almost before they could answer me, lillian was off… running to the surf as fast as her little legs could go – the child is fearless! :)

it was so wonderful to see all of you and spend the afternoon together – I had SO much fun and can’t wait for our next session! xo

Aside from my first love- photography- I am passionate about scuba diving.  It not only gives me an excuse to travel but a chance to see the ocean’s true beauty.  When I’m down on a tropical reef I am able to see a whole community working in sync, awesome colors, exotic creatures and hear nothing but the bubbles from my tank.  I can completely shut out from the world and all of its troubles and enjoy this beauty around me.  I started getting involved in diving after high school when I signed up to help map out a ship wreck in Bermuda.  Since then I’ve been working on my instructors certification and have traveled to many tropical places.  Diving isn’t only a hobby, but a necessity for me to step back from a crazy lifestyle and enjoy nature and the tropics.

p.s. this is just a carcass I found- not a live animal :)

one of the favorite things about my job is getting to meet so many different people and a lot of my clients become dear friends. mel and mike are two of those people. I had been hired by mel’s sister brittany to shoot her wedding to josh and just a few weeks later I got a call from mel and mike wanting me to shoot theirs as well. we hit it off right away and stayed in touch since their big day. I knew that mel had an interest and obvious talent in photography so when kristie and I were planning on hiring new team members last winter, I gave her a call. happily she has joined us and been such a wonderful addition to our GPA family! and in just a little less than a month, she and mike are going to become new parents to a baby girl they’ve named bella :) do you think little bella is going to be photographed much?? her 3 aunties here at the studio are SO excited!!

  • where and when did you get married? shad landing, snow hill october 16th 2009
  • was there a special reason for choosing your venue? we’re both outdoorsy, we really like the woods and wanted to get married somewhere that would have a beautiful view of the fall colors and be able to house our guests, too. we had a great, scenic backdrop and the pavilion we had for the reception had a cozy fireplace. it was perfect!
  • what was your most memorable moment(s)? mike and I both agree – the rain. ever since I was a little girl, I always wanted to get married in the rain. we did and it was perfect!
  • if you had it to do over again, would you change anything and what/why? not a single thing. it was perfect!
  • where did you honeymoon? we took a stay-cation for our honeymoon. we didn’t travel anywhere, just took a few days off to spend time together as newlyweds!
